Wildcats Hold off Stony Brook in 3-2 Victory

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three Wildcats notched double figure kills as the Villanova volleyball team (2-0) defeated Stony Brook in five sets (25-17, 20-25, 17-25, 25-16, 15-6) on Saturday morning at the Maryland Invitational.

Sophomore Morgan Petkovich posted a match-high 20 kills to lead the squad, while freshman Krista Andersen notched 16 with a .432 attack percentage. Sophomore Maggie Mergen added 13 kills.

Sophomore Courtney Oertli dished out 50 assists in the victory, with classmate Kim Maroon collecting 25 digs. Freshman Kristina Bither added 10 digs.

In the first set the teams traded points back and forth to tie at 9-9, but with the Wildcats leading at 11-10 they took a 7-1 run on serving from Andersen to jump ahead, 18-11. Petkovich hit back-to-back kills to keep VU in front, 20-13 and sealed the first set at 25-17 with a final kill.

`Nova trailed 14-12 in the second frame and saw Stony Brook use a 6-2 run to jump ahead 20-14. Kills from Mergen and Andersen forced SBU to take a timeout as a kill from Oertli put Villanova with three points, 23-20, but Stony Brook held on to claim the second set.

The Wildcats used their first timeout as they trailed 10-5 quickly. Unable to find an offensive groove, VU called its final timeout trailing 18-9, but used a 7-2 run with consecutive kills from Andersen to force SBU into a timeout trailing 22-16. The `Cats scored just one more point as SBU took the third set victory.

Miscues from Stony Brook and an ace from Maroon put Villanova in front, 9-4 as SBU used a quick timeout. The Wildcats held on to the lead with Stony Brook calling its final timeout, still down 19-12 as Maroon served strong for three additional points and a 22-13 advantage. The Wildcats had set point at 24-16 with Bither serving an ace to force a fifth and final set.

Villanova dominated quickly with an early 6-2 lead after miscues from SBU. After a timeout, Petkovich hit two kills and kept the `Cats in front, 10-3. Stony Brook scored just three more points as a kill from Andersen sealed the match victory.
