Nov. 1, 2014

Recap | Box Score | Quotes

  • Villanova saw a seven-game winning streak come to an end and lost for the first time this season in conference play.
  • This was the third time this season that the Wildcats played a ranked opponent. Villanova had previously defeated then-No. 11 Fordham (50-6) and then-No. 15 William & Mary (35-31). With today's loss, the Wildcats are now 43-38 (.531) all-time in matchups of ranked opponents.
  • Villanova was held to just 253 yards of total offense in the game. It was the fewest total yards for the Wildcats offense since having 244 yards at home against Old Dominion on October 22, 2011. The last time Villanova was limited to fewer than 300 yards was on November 24, 2012 at Stony Brook (271 yards) in the first round of the FCS playoffs.
  • The only points scored by either team in the first half came on a 24-yard field goal by freshman kicker Steve Weyler with 2:39 left in the second quarter. The last time the Wildcats were held without a touchdown in the first half was last season against William & Mary on October 5, 2013. In that game, Villanova trailed 7-3 at the half before rallying for a 20-16 victory.
  • The field goal that Steve Weyler made in the second quarter was the first of his career and was just the second field goal attempted by the Wildcats in the past seven games.
  • The defense for the Wildcats played its second shutout half of the season when it blanked Richmond in the first half. Villanova previously held Penn off the scoreboard in the second half of a 41-7 victory on September 27. The last time the Wildcats shut out an opponent in the first half was last season in a 45-0 win at Rhode Island on November 9, 2013.
  • Villanova's defense registered a season-high four turnovers gained thanks to two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. It was the most turnovers forced by the Wildcats since gaining five turnovers at Towson last season on October 12, 2013.
  • Junior safety Cameron McCurry had a career-high 15 tackles, including eight solo stops. It was the second time in his career that McCurry reached double digits in tackles. He previously had 12 stops last season at New Hampshire on October 19, 2013.
  • During the game, junior quarterback John Robertson moved into fifth place in school history in career passing yards. Robertson passed Tom Colombo (1989-92), who had 5,825 career passing yards. Robertson's current career total is 5,927 yards.
  • In the first quarter, Villanova had a third-and-goal play from the Richmond seven-yard line when a pass attempt by John Robertson was intercepted. It was only the second interception thrown by Robertson this season and snapped a streak of 16 consecutive trips inside the red zone where the Wildcats offense scored a touchdown.
