No. 3 Villanova to Face No. 1 Georgetown in the BIG EAST Tournament Finals Saturday

Washington, D.C.- The Villanova Wildcats will take on the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday afternoon in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship game, with the winner getting the automatic qualify spot in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.  The finals can be seen on CBS Sports Network and first faceoff is scheduled for 4:30 P.M. at Cooper Field.

Matchup History:  Saturday will mark the 31st meeting all-time between the Wildcats and Hoyas with the series tied at 15 wins apiece.  Georgetown has won the last seven meetings including last week when the teams faced off in the final game of the regular season at Villanova Stadium.  Matt Campbell had a team high four points for the Wildcats while Dylan Watson had a game high five goals for Georgetown.

A Look at Villanova: Senior attackman Matt Campbell had been the leader of Villanova's offense this season.  Entering the championship game Campbell has a team high 62 points on 42 goals and 20 assists.   Campbell had five goals during the Wildcats 15-14 semifinal win against Denver, including what would be the game-winner with 20 seconds remaining.  J.P. Basile played a balance offensive game Thursday night vs. Denver.  The graduate student had three goals and the same number of assists along with a pair of ground balls. On the defensive side the Wildcats caused 10 turnovers, with Chris Hervada having two.  Chet Comizio's caused turnover in the fourth quarter tied him for 10th all-time at Villanova. Will Vitton picked up his ninth win of the season in goal and finished with 13 saves against Denver. 

A Look at Georgetown:  The Hoya's are ranked second in the USILA poll entering this weekend of action.  In the second BIG EAST semifinal game Georgetown defeated Marquette 15-5.  Declan McDermott and Graham Bundy Jr. lead the Hoya offense with four goals apiece.  Senior attack Dylan Watson and Bundy Jr. have a team high 63 points, with Watson netting 57 goals through 15 games.  Will Bowen, who was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, has 32 caused turnovers and 41 ground balls this season.  In goal for the Hoyas is Owen McElroy.  This season he boasts an 7.80 goals against average and .629 save percentage in just over 638 minutes between the posts.

BIG EAST Tournament Finals:  The Villanova Wildcats have advanced to the tournament finals for the first time since 2014 and third time since the BIG EAST formed in 2012.  In 2013 after defeating Georgetown 15-12 in the semifinals the Wildcats fell to Syracuse in the championship game.  In 2014 after beating Marquette 9-6 in the semifinals the Wildcats faced Denver and fell 14-7.
