BUFFALO, N.Y. - In the first day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Buffalo, N.Y,. senior Kareem Archer ran 51.00 in the 400-meter hurdle trials to win his heat. Archer, whose qualifying time rates as the sixth fastest, will advance to the finals to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5. Omar Brown of Oklahoma clocked the fastest time in the trials in 50.22.
Freshman Ann McGranahan competed in the 10,000 meter run, where she tallied a 14th place finish. Running a strong race, McGranahan settled into third place for much of the way, before falling to 14th in a time of 35:09.81. Arizona's Amy Skierecz captured the 10,000 meter championship in a time of 33:04.12.
Sophomore Tamieka Grizzle finished sixth in her heat of the 800 meters, posting a run of 2:15.32 and did not qualify for the finals.
Four Wildcats will be in action on Thursday, June 4. Freshman Charmaine Walker will run in the 100-meter hurdle trials at 6 p.m., while Archer returns to the track to compete in the 110-meter hurdle trials beginning at 6:20 p.m. Also at 6 p.m., junior Jermaine Deans will participate in the long jump finals. Sophomore Carmen Douma will compete in the 1500-meters semifinals at 7:55 p.m. In the latest edition of Track & Field News, Douma was chosen as the favorite to win the 1500- meter run.
