Two Villanova Wildcats earned prestigious honors this week for their play in No. 21 Villanova's 26-21 upset over No. 2 and defending National Champion Massachusetts Minutemen. For their efforts against Massachusetts, junior linebacker Joe Quartey was named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week, while sophomore place kicker Casey Hannon earned ESPN/USA Today Division I-AA Special Teams Player of the Week.
Quartey led a dominant defensive attack that created four turnovers and sacked Massachusetts quarterback Todd Bankhead seven times. From his outside linebacker spot, Quartey tallied a game-high 11 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery. After three games, the 6-0, 220 pound Quartey has 23 tackles, two quarterback sacks and two fumble recoveries.
Hannon had a busy afternoon for the Wildcats, as the sophomore connected on three-of-four field goal attempts and a PAT to account for 10 of Villanova's 26 points. Besides making good from 41 and 21 yards out, Hannon also recorded a career-long 46-yard field goal. In his Villanova career, Hannon is now an impressive 13-of-16 in field goal attempts.
