RICHMOND REPORT: The Spiders enter play this week ranked No. 12 in the nation. Last week, Richmond opened up its 1999 season at home with a convincing 42-6 victory over VMI. Junior running back TyRonne Turner led the Spider attack with 100 yards rushing on 11 carries for an average of 9.1 yards per rush. Sophomore J.R. Purnell added 80 yards on 11 carries, while senior quarterback Jimmie Miles tallied 77 yards on 14 carries and scored four rushing touchdowns. For the game, Richmond gained 365 yards on the ground. In the air, Miles completed 5-of-12 for 101 yards and one touchdown. Senior wideout Dwaune Jones recorded three catches for 64 yards and a touchdown.
On defense, Richmond held VMI to just 131 yards of total offense and six first downs. VMI managed to complete just 3-of-12 passes for 20 yards. Sophomore defensive end Randy Witham led the Spider defense with eight total stops, while sophomore linebacker Jonathan Wilfong had three tackles for loss.
SPIDER HEAD COACH JIM REID: Richmond is led by fifth-year head coach Jim Reid. During his tenure at Richmond, Reid has guided the Spiders to a 25-20-1 mark, including a 17-15 record in Atlantic 10 Conference games. Last season, Reid led Richmond to the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 9-3 overall record and a 7-1 conference mark . Reid and the Spiders earned the league's automatic bid to the I-AA playoffs last season where they lost to Lehigh in the first round. For his efforts last season, he was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. Reid came to Richmond from Boston College where he served as defensive coordinator during the 1994 season. Before his short stint at Boston College, Reid was the defensive coordinator at Richmond from 1992-93. He spent the first 19 years of his coaching career at the University of Massachusetts as both an assistant and a head coach. Reid was the head man at UMass from 1986-91, where he compiled a 36-29 record and led the Minutemen to three Yankee Conference Championships. His 11-year overall coaching mark currently stands at 61-49-3.

TALLEY'S TENURE: Entering his 15th season on the Main Line, head coach Andy Talley can feel responsible for every facet of the Villanova football program, having started it from scratch in 1985. In his career at Villanova, Talley has recorded a 94-57-1 mark making him the all-time winningest coach in Villanova history. Talley's 20-year overall coaching record currently stands at 122-73-2. During his career as the Wildcat mentor, Talley has guided Villanova to five NCAA playoff appearances (1989, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997) three Conference titles and one Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy. In 1997, Talley garnered the Eddie Robinson Award and the AFCA/GTE National Coach of the Year.
VILLANOVA PICKED SIXTH: In the pre-season Atlantic 10 poll as selected by the coaches and media, Villanova was chosen to finish sixth. Defending I-AA National Champion Massachusetts was picked to win the league followed by Delaware, Connecticut, William & Mary and Richmond. Following Villanova, the seventh through 11th spots were occupied by New Hampshire, Maine, Northeastern, James Madison and Rhode Island.
MONTH OF CHAMPIONS: This week's game with Richmond is the second of four-straight games versus defending champions. After leading off with defending WAC Champion Air Force last week, the 'Cats play at Atlantic 10 Champion Richmond this Saturday before heading home to play the defending I-AA National Champion Massachusetts Minutemen on Sept. 18. Villanova will finish the month of September at crosstown rival and defending Ivy League Champion University of Pennsylvania on Sept. 25. The 11 opponents on Villanova's 1999 slate had a combined 83-46 record last season.
OVERTIME HISTORY: During Andy Talley's tenure as Villanova's head football coach, the Wildcats have participated in five overtime games and have tallied a 3-2 record. Four of the five overtime games have been played at Villanova Stadium. Villanova's last overtime contest came in the home opener last year (Sept. 12, 1998) when the 'Cats defeated Delaware 34-31 on Casey Hannon's 35-yard field goal.
BAD NEWS: The 1999 Villanova football season started off on a sour note when it was learned a week before pre-season camp on August 2 that All-American running back Brian Westbrook would be lost for the season due to a knee injury. The 5-9, 195 pound junior underwent an arthroscopic procedure in March and after an extensive rehabilitation program did not produce the desired results, Westbrook opted to have reconstructive surgery. Westbrook is coming off a sensational sophomore season where he became the first player in the history of NCAA football at any level to rush for 1,000 yards and receive for 1,000 yards in the same season. In 11 games in 1998, Westbrook gained 1,046 yards on 200 carries and scored 10 touchdowns and he made 89 receptions for 1,144 yards and 15 touchdowns. In addition, the Ft. Washington, Md., native tallied 836 yards in returns, including returning one kickoff for a touchdown. Besides leading all of I-AA in scoring with 160 points, Westbrook established an NCAA I-AA record for all-purpose yards in a season with 3,026. For his efforts last season, Westbrook was named first team All-American by both the Associated Press and The Sports Network. Westbrook will medically redshirt this year and will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2000 season.
HEADING FOR HISTORY: Senior Chris Boden enters this week's game with 77 career touchdowns passes which is just one shy of the Atlantic 10 Conference record for career scoring strikes held by Rhode Island's Tom Ehrhardt who threw 78 touchdown passes from 1984-86.
300 AGAIN: Senior quarterback Chris Boden, who will be making his 26th consecutive start this Saturday at Richmond, went over the 300-yard passing plateau for the 11th time in his career last Saturday at Air Force. In his 25 straight starts, he has thrown at least one touchdown pass in all 25 games. In those 25 contests, Boden has tossed three or more scoring strikes 12 times. Only twice has Boden thrown just one touchdown pass in a game. The San Clemente, Calif., native has thrown for over 3,000 yards in two straight seasons (3,707 in 1997/ 3,050 in 1998).
NEARING 1,000: With 17 pass attempts this week at Richmond, quarterback Chris Boden will throw his 1,000 career pass in a Villanova uniform. Entering play this Saturday, Boden has completed 601-of-983 (61%) for 7,392 yards and 77 touchdowns during his Wildcat career.
BODEN ON PACE: Already the owner of 21 Villanova school records, Wildcat senior quarterback Chris Boden is on pace to break two more school marks in 1999. Entering play this Saturday, Boden has 601 career completions and is just 192 shy of Kirk Schulz's career mark of 793. In addition, Boden has thrown for 7,392 career yards and he is 2,284 yards away from Schulz's school record of 9,676 yards.
SANGO BREAKS OUT: Sophomore wide receiver Murle Sango had one of the finest days of his young career last Saturday at Air Force when he tied his career-high with eight receptions for 109 yards and a career-best two touchdowns. Last season, Sango had 32 receptions for 422 yards and one touchdown in 11 games.
BIG TARGET: Tight end Joe Kavanaugh showed last Saturday at Air Force why he is one of the top tight ends in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The 6-7, 240 pound Kavanaugh had a career day in Colorado Springs, recording career-highs of seven catches for 78 yards, including a career-best 30 yard reception. Due to injury, Kavanaugh played in just six games in 1998, tallying 10 receptions for 138 yards.
DOMINANT DEFENDER: Strong safety DeLonne Kelly was outstanding in last week's 37-13 loss at Air Force. Against the Falcons, Kelly was credited with a game-high 18 tackles (nine solo/nine assisted), two tackles for loss and a pass break-up. The 18 tackles is the most by a Villanova player since linebacker Curtis Eller registered 22 stops at Connecticut during the 1992 season. Last season as a free safety, Kelly finished second on the team in tackles with 94.
DOUBLE DIGIT TACKLERS: In addition to DeLonne Kelly, two other Wildcats tallied double digits in tackles last Saturday against Air Force. Cornerback Hezekiah Lewis amassed 10 tackles (seven solo/three assists) and a fumble recovery, while linebacker Joe Quartey registered 10 tackles (1 solo/nine assisted), a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
PLENTY OF ACTION: The Villanova defensive unit certainly got a good workout last Saturday at Air Force, as the Falcons ran 89 plays in the game. Of the 89 offensive plays run by Air Force, 72 were rushing attempts. In comparison, Villanova tallied 63 plays with 46 of them coming via the pass.
NEW ROLE: Redshirt freshman Jason McMillion will be making his first career start this Saturday versus Richmond at middle linebacker in place of the injured David Heckard. McMillion came in for Heckard in the second quarter last Saturday when Heckard sustained an injured knee and finished the game with seven tackles. A native of Apopka, Fla., McMillion stands at 5-11 and weighs 225 pounds.
GROUNDED: Villanova had a difficult time getting its running game going last Saturday at Air Force. In the loss, the Wildcats had 17 rushes for just 25 yards. Redshirt freshman Cameron Cross was the team's leading rusher with 18 yards on four carries.
REVAMPED SECONDARY: Even though three of last year's secondary members return this year, there will be a new look to the Villanova secondary this season. Senior cornerback Hezekiah Lewis, who split time between corner and safety last year, is expected to play only corner in 1999. Lewis is a pre-season first team All-Atlantic 10 selection. Senior DeLonne Kelly will move from free safety to strong safety this season, while junior Braheem Powell will switch from corner to free safety. The one new member to the secondary this year will be sophomore Brian Berko-Boateng. As a redshirt freshman last year, Berko-Boateng played on the offensive side of the ball as a wide receiver.
STREAK SNAPPED: When sophomore kicker Casey Hannon had a PAT blocked following Villanova's second touchdown last week at Air Force, the kicker saw his 39-straight successful PAT steak snapped. As a freshman last year, Hannon made 10-of-12 field goals and 40-of-42 PATs to finish second on the team in scoring with 70 points. For his efforts in 1998, he earned second team acclaim from both the ECAC and Atlantic 10 Conference. He was named pre-season first team All-Atlantic 10 this season. Hannon began his career at Penn State before transferring to Villanova before the 1998 season.
LEADING THE WAY: Senior linebacker Shaun Lyons is expected to be a major force on the Wildcat defense in 1999. Last season, Lyons led the 'Cats in tackles for the second straight year with 104 stops (64 solo/40 assisted) to go with seven tackles for loss. In the season opener at Air Force last Saturday, Lyons had eight tackles, including one for loss. For his efforts last season, Lyons was named third team All-Atlantic 10. In 1997, Lyons made a team-best 113 tackles. Earning a starting spot midway through his freshman season, Lyons will be making his 32nd straight start this week at Richmond. Lyons was named first team pre-season All-Atlantic 10.
IRON MAN: Junior offensive tackle Stan Bennett has started every game of his Villanova career and will be making his 26th consecutive start against Richmond this Saturday. As a true freshman in 1997, Bennett started all 13 games at guard before moving to tackle last year where he started all 11 contests.
WILDCATS ON THE RADIO: Every Villanova football game this season will be carried live by the Villanova Football Radio Network. The flagship station for the Wildcats this season will be WFIL-AM 560. Also carrying Wildcat games in 1999 will be WJNN-FM 106.7 out of Cape May, N.J. Returning for his 13th season as Villanova's play-by-play man is Joe Eichhorn. Joining Eichhorn for an eighth consecutive year is Ryan Fannon. All 11 Wildcat gridiron contests will be broadcast live, with a pre-game show airing 30 minutes prior to kickoff during away games and one hour prior to kickoff for home games.
ANDY TALLEY RADIO SHOW: Continuing in 1999, WFIL-AM 560-AM, WZZD-AM 990 and WJNN-FM 106.7, will broadcast the Andy Talley Radio Show. The one-hour call-in show is hosted by color commentator Ryan Fannon and will provide a weekly recap of Villanova football games, as well as a preview of upcoming contests. The show will be held at the Wild Onion Restaurant located just up the street from Villanova Stadium on Conestoga Road. Throughout the one-hour program, Fannon and Coach Talley will take questions concerning all the teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference, as well as NCAA I-AA football on a national scene.
