To observe National Student-Athlete Day here on the campus of Villanova University we hold a Student-Athlete Appreciation Luncheon to honor those student-athletes who best exemplify the term "student-athlete".
We ask each coach to nominate one representative from their team to attend the luncheon. This representative should be the student-athlete on the team who truly serves as a role model to others. This student-athlete need not necessarily be the star of the team or even a starter. The nominee should also be someone who is involved in activities outside of athletics and a person who truly shows a concern for others.
We invite each nominee to bring a faculty member or mentor who has been helpful to them in their academic pursuits as their guest at the luncheon.
In addition, the coaches are asked to nominate one student-athlete from their team for the Sister Mary Cribben Award. Established in 1985, this award honors one male and one female who are outstanding student-athletes. The recipient of this award is described as "the student-athlete who unselfishly sacrifices time, effort, body and soul to lead and motivate his/her teammates in excelling for Villanova University through inspiration." The winner need not be the stand-out athlete on the team or even a starter, but one who has earned the respect of teammates and coaches through his/her determination. Presented at the 2002 Student-Athlete Appreciation Luncheon, this year's recipients of the Sister Mary Cribben Award were seniors Brooke Bergmann, Field Hockey and B.J. Johnson, Men's Basketball.
