Feb. 27, 2004

Final Stats

HOUSTON, TEXAS - The Villanova softball team defeated BYU, 4-3 on Friday at the Hyatt Regency Cougar Classic, to snap the Cougars' six-game winning streak. The victory was Villanova's third of the season, all garnered by junior ace Shannon Williams.

Williams was not as dominant as in her last two outings, but still went the distance for her third straight victory after losing the season opener against Western Kentucky. The right-hander allowed three runs - all on solo home runs, including two by Kate Walker - while scattering three hits, striking out six and walking three.

Villanova's offense got in gear in the bottom of the fourth, after the Wildcats fell behind 3-0. The 'Cats scored two in the fourth off Cougar starter Ariel Capra, and then one each in the fifth and sixth, hanging on for the one-run victory.

A pair of juniors, Kari Koller and Kristen Yauch, continued their hot starts to the 2004 season, each going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Sheri Donley picked up Villanova's third run batted in.

The 'Cats (3-4) continue play on the campus of the University of Houston on Saturday, Feb. 28. Nova will take on Mississippi State at 1:00 p.m., and the host Cougars at 7:00 p.m.

Also, Villanova's game against Virginia, originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 27 at 9:00 a.m., will be played on Sunday, Feb. 29 at 12:00 p.m.
