JAMAICA, N.Y. - After winning 18 of 24 games in the month of April, the Villanova softball team got into action on Saturday, May 1, and lost both games of a doubleheader against St. John's, 3-0 and 1-0 in Jamaica, N.Y. The Wildcats fell to 29-20 overall on the season, and 11-7 in the Big East. The Red Storm improved to 25-23, 7-7 in conference play.
'Nova junior right-hander Shannon Williams (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) made some history in game one, throwing her 20th complete game of the season, a new VU single season record. Unfortunately for Williams and the 'Cats, the record came in a loss, as the Red Storm's Courtney Fitzgerald held Villanova scoreless on four hits, striking out ten.
Two of the three runs scored against Williams were unearned. Wildcat freshman shortstop Sheri Donley had two hits in the loss.
Game two was more of the same, as Fitzgerald went the distance again, this time shutting out the Wildcats on three hits and striking out seven. She did not walk a batter the entire afternoon.
Villanova's Kristen Haynes nearly matched her, but Jo Sherlock's 13th home run of the season in the fourth inning proved to be the difference. Donley added another hit for the Wildcats in the nightcap.
Thirteen of Villanova's 20 losses in 2004 have now come by way of the shutout, including the last nine consecutive setbacks.
The Big East portion of the schedule will come to an end for the Wildcats on Sunday. Villanova and Seton Hall will meet for a doubleheader at noon in South Orange, N.J.
