Final Stats

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The Wildcats' offensive struggles cost them a doubleheader on Sunday, as the Terrapins went 11 innings for a 1-0 victory in the first game, and won the nightcap, 2-1. It was the first time 'Nova has been in action in seven days.

Kristen Haynes started the game one marathon, but it was Shannon Williams who took the loss in relief. Williams allowed a one-out triple in the 11th to Lindsay Klein, and then one out later, surrendered the game-winning single to Liz Gall.

In 23 losses this season, Villanova has scored just 11 runs combined. In 30 wins, the Wildcats have plated 142 runs.

Williams pitched six-plus innings after Haynes struggled with her control, hitting four batters in the first five innings. On the other hand, Maryland's Monica Cyphert allowed just four hits and walked one in 11 innings. She pitched a perfect game through seven and one-third innings before a single by Sarah Wall.

Allie Wisniewski got Villanova on the board in the fourth inning of game two. Her RBI double gave the Wildcats the lead, but the Terps' Natalie Grossman came through with a two-RBI double in the bottom half of the inning. That proved to be the game-winner after Villanova stranded two base runners in the top of the seventh.

Jessica Aditays was the winner in the circle for Maryland. Williams took the loss in a complete game effort. She now stands at 20-13 on the year. The Wildcats fell to 30-23, while the Terrapins are now 31-25.

Centerfielder Robin Flier went 3-for-4 in game two, and finished the afternoon with four hits. She also stole two bases. Freshman catcher Cassie Koenig added a pair of doubles for the Wildcats.

While Villanova was in Maryland, the rest of the Big East finished up league play, and the 'Cats, at 12-8, are the No. 3 seed for the upcoming conference tournament. VU will play No. 2 Seton Hall on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y. Regular season champion Notre Dame will take on No. 4 Boston College in Thursday's other first round game of the double elimination tourney.

Villanova wraps up the 2004 regular season on Monday, May 10. The Wildcats will host Saint Joseph's in a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. The five Villanova seniors - Flier, Ricci Lugo, Lisa Krueger, Kristen Strait and Andrea Brown - will be honored prior to first pitch.
