UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- Strong showings in the distance relay events were the highlight for Villanova at the 2008-opening Penn State Relays at the Horace Ashenfelter III Track this past Saturday. The Wildcats placed entries in the 1600, 3200 and distance medley relays and currently have the fastest times in the BIG EAST this season in all three events.
In the 4x400 meter relay, Villanova took first out of 14 entries with a time of 3:14.08. That mark is four seconds faster than a time posted by a Notre Dame quarter earlier this season. Running in the relay for the Wildcats were freshman Christopher Giunta (Sands Point, N.Y.), senior John Wilsman (Philadelphia, Pa.), sophomore Garrett Kroner (Oakland, N.J.) and junior Elvis Lewis (West Hempstead, N.Y.). A second Villanova entry placed seventh in the event with a time of 3:19.62.
The Wildcats also did well in the 4x800 meter relay, finishing second out of eight teams with a time of 7:39.46. The quartet of freshman Jason Apwah (Roxbury, N.J.), seniors Mark Korich (Glenside, Pa.) and Kyle Audi (Loudonville, N.Y.), and junior Sean Tully (Syosset, N.Y.) ran for Villanova, which had its second entry place sixth in 7:52.20.
Villanova finished second out of eight squads with a time of 10:0.4.21 in the distance medley relay. Korich led off and was followed by junior Brandon Eck (State College, Pa.), Audi and freshman Carl Mackenzie (Lower Hutt, New Zealand). The Wildcats also had their second entry finish third with a time of 10:08.64.
Individually for Villanova, freshman Brian Tetreault (Cinnaminson, N.J.) took third place out of 22 competitors in the mile with a time of 4:20.78. Additionally, freshman Robert Sainvil (Bay Shore, N.Y.) placed 9th out of 13 in the triple jump with a mark of 14.03m (46'0.5") which qualified him for next month's BIG EAST Championship meet.
Giunta ran in the 300 meter dash and was seventh out of 27 individuals with a time of 35.06, while senior John Morse (South Elgin, Ill.) placed eighth out of 26 runners in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:05.97.
