VILLANOVA, Pa.--Over the course of three days last week, the coaching staffs of the track & field and women's basketball teams hosted national team coaches from all over the world in an International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Program (ICECP) which is affiliated with the U.S. Olympic Committee and the University of Delaware. The mission of the ICECP is to provide national level coaches from other countries with a practical program orientated towards developing proficiency in all aspects of running a national level program.
Seminars at Villanova were hosted from Monday through Wednesday by men's and women's track & field head coaches Marcus O'Sullivan and Gina Procaccio and their respective staffs, along with women's basketball head coach Harry Perretta and the rest of his coaching staff.
Among the topics covered by the track & field coaches were the important elements and practical application of throwing, sprints and jumps, pole vaulting and distance running. The visiting coaches also had a session dedicated to leadership led by Villanova Director of Athletics Vince Nicastro.
The visiting basketball coaches joined the Wildcats to observe practice and other team training sessions, while also sharing ideas with the Villanova coaches on training and specific technical aspects of implementing a national level basketball program.
The ICECP provides the visiting coaches with a five-week program that not only includes training participants to develop athletes, but will provide the participants with the skills and competencies needed to train coaches in their home country.
One part of the five-week program consists of a participant serving an apprenticeship with either the coaching staff of a United States national team or a high level university coaching staff in his or her respective sports. It was this phase of the program that the Villanova coaches were participating in.
The apprenticeship includes having the visiting coaches attend practice and participate when appropriate, as well as meeting with the coaching staffs of the host school and learning more about sports role in higher education while having the opportunity to experience American culture.
The nature of the apprenticeship is designed so that the participant gets an in-depth sport specific experience that enables the coaches to develop their coaching skills, while also acquiring information that can be shared upon returning to their native country to grow the sport in the country.
The ICECP is funded through the International Olympic Committees Olympic Solidarity Fund and the United States Olympic Committee.
