ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Villanova University head football coach Andy Talley and star wide receiver Matt Szczur were honored on Friday, March 5, by the Maxwell Football Club. The two received their honors at a banquet held at Harrah's in Atlantic City, N.J.
Talley earned the Maxwell Club President's Award for Outstanding Achievement, while Szczur garnered the Maxwell Club Tri-State Player of the Year.
The 2009 season was a special one for Talley and Szczur as both played prominent roles in helping Villanova to a 14-1 record en route to capturing the FCS National Championship. In addition to this award, Talley also earned AFCA National Coach of the Year accolades, the CAA Coach of the Year and he was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award.
Szczur finished the season with 108 carries for 813 yards and 10 touchdowns, 51 receptions for 610 yards and four scores and 30 kickoff returns for 816 yards and one touchdown. Szczur was named the CAA Offensive Player of the Year and the league's Special Teams Player of the Year, as well as earning first team All-American honors by the Sports Network, Associated Press and Walter Camp Foundation.
