Stephanie Schappert Wins Individual Title at Main Line Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Senior Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) led the way for Villanova in a successful start to the season and captured the individual title at the Main Line Invitational on Thursday evening. Schappert covered the three-mile Alumni Course at Haverford College in 16:51.10 and recorded a margin of victory of more than 11 seconds. The top five finishers for the Wildcats were all in the top 10 overall in the team's first meet of the year.

Schappert has run in the Main Line meet each of her four years on the team and her time in Thursday's race was a personal best for the course. She has finished within the top six in each of her four races in the meet and paced a field of 61 runners to notch the victory. Elyssa Gensib from Penn was the runner-up with a time of 17:02.40.

Villanova had 11 of its 17 runners in action in the meet, which featured a total of six local teams. The season-opener for the Wildcats is a good barometer for the team to measure its progress before getting into the bulk of the season schedule. Villanova competes at the Washington Invitational next weekend in its first scored meet of the year.

Sophomore Caitlin Bungo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led a quartet of Wildcats that finished from seventh through 10th overall. Bungo crossed the finish line in 17:22.00 and was just ahead of junior Sydney Harris (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in eighth place (17:22.50). Sophomore Julie Williams (Wilmington, Del.) and freshman Nicole Armstrong (Sydenham, Ont.) placed ninth (17:29.70) and 10th (17:32.20), respectively.

Also running strong for Villanova was sophomore Alexandra Russo (Bellport, N.Y.), who came in 12th with a time of 17:39.00. She was followed in short order by freshmen Erin Jaskot (Blauvelt, N.Y.) and Katie Fisher (Uxbridge, Ont.) in 17th (17:54.10) and 18th (17:56.90) place, respectively. Junior Leanne Tucker (Tewksbury, Mass.) finished 20th (18:05.80), while freshman Rebecca Del Rossi (Canton, N.Y.) was 22nd (18:09.40) and senior Megan Venables (Laurel Springs, N.J.) was 31st (18:31.20).
