Oct. 28, 2015 VILLANOVA, Pa.- Villanova head football coach Andy Talley spoke to the media at his weekly press conference Wednesday afternoon.
Talley touched on last Saturday's loss versus Towson, their upcoming game against Maine, and the Be the Match Program.
Below are excerpts from his press conference.
Talley on the Towson Game Part 1:
"I thought we played really well. I'm very pleased with the way we played. The defense stepped up and held Towson to less than 300 yards of total offense. Their great running back Darius Victor we held in control. Offensively, we had 400 plus yards of total offense. So when you look at the game we knew it was going to be close and a tough battle. Two of the turnovers were pick sixes which really hampered us especially since both plays we were going in to score."
Talley on the Towson Game Part 2:
"Our quarterback Zach Bednarczyk did a nice job all day except for those two plays. Those are unfortunate things that happen with a freshman quarterback. I'm hoping he will learn from this. He ran the ball well which we were happy to see, and we had pretty good offensive production. We held the ball for 37 minutes, and they held it for about 24 minutes. We really controlled the game, but when you throw two interceptions they take back for touchdowns it makes for a rough day."
Talley on the Maine Game:
"This week is really an important game for us if we want to at least hang around and see what happens in the end. We still have a shot in the league. We are 2-2 and Maine is 3-1. It will be a real physical contest. They [Maine] still feel very good about themselves. They played Tulane and Boston College to open up the season. That's a bit rough, but they have come on very nicely. They, like us, have a lot of guys hurt. We're excited that it is a nationally televised game on NBC."
Talley on the Villanova defense:
"We're playing great defense right now. It's a shame because this one of the better defenses we have had. Last week, they were great. Not having an explosive offensive cast to support them is so frustrating. I think right now for us Maine is the focal point. We can't look beyond that. We need a win to get us of the floor."
Talley on team morale:
"Our spirit is still good. This league is very, very difficult and you just have to fight through the injury part of it. We are pleased to be playing at home. If you take a look around the country they're three injuries to really good quarterbacks. Our quarterback John Robertson, Vad Lee down at James Madison, and Carson Wentz at North Dakota State. It's one of those years where you never know what is going to happen. We're going to fight to the very end, and see if we can make some noise in the league as we move along."
Talley on the Be the Match program:
"It is a Be the Match game on Saturday. The CAA has embraced the Be the Match Saturday. We'll have our Be the Match patches on, and our players will have the insignia on the helmet. It is really the first league in the country that has committed to having marrow drives every year. We're spreading the word on top of raising good kids, and trying to win football games. I think most importantly we're saving lives. We're excited about the national exposure for the Be the Match program."
