Talley Speaks at Weekly Media Press Conference

Sept. 30, 2015

VILLANOVA, Pa.- Villanova head football coach Andy Talley spoke to the media at his weekly press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Talley touched on last Thursday's loss against Penn, the loss of John Robertson, and the upcoming bye week.

Below are excerpts from his press conference.

Talley on the Penn game:

"Penn played great. They came out ready to play, and got after us in every facet of the game. We just never really caught up. At times, we had some things that I thought we did well in the second half. We only had the ball for five minutes in the first half which is credit to Penn's defense. It was a tough night for us coming off of the Delaware victory the week before. Penn gave us all we wanted from a defensive standpoint. The way they attack us was fantastic. We got to go back to the drawing board."

Talley on John Robertson:

"Of course losing John was pretty traumatic for all of us. John was the eraser. He was the guy that every one of us get every so often in a generation that can make something out of nothing. He kept us afloat for so many games. He won so many games on his legs, his moxie, and his ability. There are not many around like him. He was an x-factor and now we don't have that."

Talley on Zach Bednarczyk and the offense:

"We're going with Zach our redshirt freshman quarterback. We are trying to scheme up our offensive line to get some of our guys back. We lost Brad Seaton for the year with knee surgery. We lost our other tackle Ethan Greenidge with a high ankle sprain. We're hoping to maintain our offensive line this week. I'm look forward to us improving on offense."

Talley on Bednarczyk and the offense part two:

"We need to run him [Zach]. He needs to do the same things John did in terms of running the option, scrambling, and finding people on the run. For seven games, hopefully he can stay healthy and we're going to try and open up our offense more. If we want to be anything in this league he [Zach] has to get after it in the running and passing game."

Talley on Don Cherry:

"Don is an All-American. I think he tried to do too much on Thursday night for sure. He's best when we have a nose guard that can control the center a little bit, and then he can flow to the gaps where he needs to go. He's trying to cover too many gaps right now. He's a superior football player. He's tough, fast, hard-nosed, smart and a terrific leader. I think he's the best in our league for sure, and certainly one of the best in the country.

Talley on upcoming bye week:

"It's a chance to get back to basics. For us, it's trying to get healthy. This couldn't have come at a better time this open date. Based off that we have a first year player at quarterback, we are trying to get him ready in terms of what we can and cannot do with him."
