April 10, 2016 Villanova, Pa. - On Sunday, April 10, 2016, Villanova senior pitcher Kate Poppe (Downingtown, Pa.) etched her name into the record books as she recorded her 900th career strikeout in a 10-3 win over the Seton Hall Pirates.
Poppe, who is Villanova's all-time career strikeout leader, currently ranks second nationally on the NCAA active all-time career strikeouts list with 902. Oregon's Cheridan Hawkins ranks first with 997.
As a freshman, Poppe struck out 256 batters. She followed up her frosh campaign with a Villanova record 284 strikeouts as a sophomore. Last season, the righty posted 246 whiffs and this year she has already accumulated 116.
While Poppe was thrilled to have reached No. 900, she was happy that her team picked up two crucial wins over a conference foe.
"The other hundredth milestones I had were not as special because they were at times where the team was not doing as well," Poppe said. "They were cool when it happened, but this time around it was cool to share it with the whole team while we are having success."
Despite all the success, Poppe said she's just doing her job.
"I just go out and play the game. I love the feeling of a 10-3 win over a conference rival and sharing it with my best friends."
Poppe's head coach Maria DiBernardi spoke glowingly about her stud senior pitcher after today's performance.
"This something that you will never see in Villanova's program's history again," DiBernardi exclaimed. "You just don't see the dominant pitchers in college ball like you once did before. The hitters are so good nowadays. It's a tremendous milestone for Villanova and for Kate's career."
DiBernardi attributes her dominance to her work ethic on and off the field.
"Kate's work ethic is incredible. Even when we are not in practice she is pitching all the time. She's always pitching to make herself better. As freshman, Kate got known as a great rise ball pitcher and that's where she got the majority of her strikeouts. As the years go on, it gets tougher and tougher and you have to find something new. We implemented a few more pitches to her arsenal, and she has had great success throwing them. She hung in their today and got us two nice wins in BIG EAST play."
Villanova (18-13, 5-3 BIG EAST) , who is riding a nine-game winning streak, will return to action tomorrow Monday, April 11, as the Wildcats will host the very same Seton Hall Pirates they beat today starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Villanova Softball Complex.
