Wildcats to Face Lafayette For First Time in 96 Years on Saturday Night

Sept. 21, 2016

VILLANOVA, Pa. - In the final non-conference game of the regular season, No. 19 Villanova (2-1) travels to Lafayette (1-2) on Saturday night for a matchup between in-state teams who have rarely seen one another. Kickoff at Fisher Stadium in Easton is scheduled for 6 p.m. as the Wildcats and Leopards meet for only the fifth time ever, and the first time since the 1920 season.

The game will be televised live by WBPH-60, a local channel available on most Comcast channel lineups. On RCN cable systems, the game can be seen on channels 4/8 (1004/608 HD). Fans can also tune in to the radio broadcast on 610 Sports WTEL-AM and follow the action via the live stats and social media links at the top of this page.

Villanova and Lafayette met four times between 1898 and 1920 but have not played since despite just 66 miles separating the two schools. All four of the previous meetings in the series were played in Easton and all four were won by the Leopards, including three shutouts. The only one of the four contests in which the Wildcats scored points was in a 14-3 loss on October 24, 1914. Villanova will therefore be looking for its first-ever touchdown versus Lafayette in Saturday's upcoming matchup.

The season has taken shape nicely for the Wildcats over the last two weeks, as the team tallied home wins over Lehigh (26-21) and Towson (40-21). The former game was the home opener against a Patriot League foe and longtime Leopards rival, while the latter contest was Villanova's conference opener last week. Sophomore quarterback Zach Bednarczyk (Wallington, N.J.) threw three touchdown passes, two of them to junior wide receiver Taurus Phillips (Beacon, N.Y.), and junior safety Rob Rolle (Newfield, N.J.) set a school record with a 100-yard interception return for a game-sealing touchdown.

Rolle is the Wildcats first player this season to earn weekly recognition for his efforts, as he is this week's CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week. Rolle had a team-high nine tackles against Towson in addition to scoring his second defensive touchdown in the season's first three games. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown in the season opener at Pittsburgh. For the year, Rolle is tied for second on the team with 23 tackles in addition to scoring the two touchdowns.

With his 20-of-26 passing performance last week, Bednarczyk has now thrown for 405 yards with three touchdowns and just one interception on the year. He is 42-of-70 (60.0%) overall and improved his career record as a starter to 6-5 with last week's victory. Phillips scored the first two touchdowns of his career and also tallied his first career 100-yard receiving game with seven receptions for 110 yards. Bednarczyk connected with eight different receivers.

Villanova has enjoyed plenty of success against Patriot League opponents over the years. Including their win over Lehigh two weeks ago, the Wildcats are 28-4 (.875) versus Patriot League opponents during the Andy Talley era. The record includes playoff victories against Colgate (1997, 2008), Fordham (2002) and Holy Cross (2009).

Saturday evening's game will be Lafayette's second home contest against a CAA Football opponent this season. In their home opener two weeks ago, the Leopards fell to Delaware by a 24-6 count. Lafayette has also defeated Central Connecticut State (24-10) and lost to Princeton (35-31) in road games this year.

Leopards senior quarterback Drew Reed has thrown for 783 yards and six touchdowns this season while completing 67.0 percent of his passes. He has gone 73-of-109 through the air and found a favorite target in junior wide receiver Matt Mrazek, who has 19 receptions for 233 yards and five scores. Junior linebacker Michael Root leads the Lafayette defense with 31 tackles in the first three games.

After facing the Leopards this week, the Wildcats will have seven straight conference games left on its schedule. The first of those will be a road game at Elon on October 1, which will mark the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
