Box Score VILLANOVA, Pa.—A long touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage set a tone for the game and Villanova (3-5, 0-5 CAA Football) lost by a final margin of 34-0 to New Hampshire (2-6, 1-4) in its Homecoming game at Villanova Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The loss was the second straight shutout for the Wildcats, who were limited to 164 total yards by the New Hampshire defense.
After a Villanova kickoff for a touchback to start the game, New Hampshire got the ball at their own 25-yard line and Carlos Washington, Jr. ran for a 75-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Villanova missed a 41-yard field goal wide right which would have got it on the scoreboard with 9:24 left in the first quarter. New Hampshire took over at its own 24-yard line and drove 56 yards on 10 plays before kicking a 37-yard field goal which extended the margin to 10-0 with 4:42 remaining in the opening period.
Two rushing touchdowns by New Hampshire less than two minutes apart in the second quarter stretched the margin to 24-0 by halftime, at which point New Hampshire had a 261-145 advantage in total yards. Villanova was unable to gain any momentum in the second half, gaining just 19 yards after the intermission while having possession of the ball for less than nine minutes. New Hampshire wound up holding the ball for more than 35 minutes in the contest.
Senior quarterback
Zach Bednarczyk (Wallington, N.J.) returned to action for the first time since the first half of the Stony Brook game on September 29. He was 13-of-21 for 103 yards on the day, while freshman
Qadir Ismail (Bel Air, Md.) made his collegiate debut in the second half and threw for 48 yards. Four sacks by the New Hampshire defense on the day resulted in Villanova having a net total of just 18 rushing yards.
Eight different receivers caught a pass for Villanova, with senior
Jarrett McClenton (Bensalem, Pa.) leading the way with four receptions for 32 yards. Sophomore tight end
Todd Summers (Murrysville, Pa.) had a team-high 37 yards on two receptions and sophomore running back
Justin Covington (Bronx, N.Y.) rushed for 36 yards on four carries.
Freshman cornerback
Christian Benford (Randallstown, Md.) and sophomore linebacker
Amin Black (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Villanova defense with six tackles apiece. They each had one tackle for loss among the six recorded by Villanova on the day, with Black registering his fourth sack of the season.
New Hampshire quarterback Trevor Knight was 13-of-23 for 158 yards on the day, while Washington, Jr. wound up rushing for 179 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Neil O'Connor led the New Hampshire receiving corps with six receptions for 63 yards.
Sophomore punter
Nathan Fondacaro (Sewell, N.J.) had a season-high eight punts for 314 yards, while sophomore return man
Josh McGrigg (Alexandria, Va.) returned six kickoffs for 125 total yards.
Saturday's game marked the third straight for Villanova in which neither the Wildcats nor their opponent recorded a passing touchdown. It is the first time since the final three games of the 1990 season that neither team threw for a touchdown in three consecutive contests.
Villanova fell to 34-20 in Homecoming Weekend games and lost for only the fifth time in its last 18 games coming off a bye week. Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Richmond next Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest.
