In the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Big East Tournament on Sunday night, the Villanova Wildcats lost the Georgetown Hoyas by a score of 63-58. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 22-8 on the season, while Georgetown improves to 15-14 on the year.
Villanova led 49-44 with 7:06 to play in regulation, when the Hoyas scored six straight points to take a 50-49 lead at the 5:41 mark. Hoya junior guard Dionna White had four of the six points on two free throws and a lay-up. Wildcat sophomore guard Kelly Jekot made one of two at the foul line to end the Georgetown spurt and tie the game at 50-50.
On Georgetown's next possession, the Hoyas took the lead for good when Cynthia Petke drained a three from the wing to give her team a 53-50 advantage with 5:01 on the clock. Following the Petke triple, neither team was able to score for the next 3:51 until Morgan Smith converted a driving lay-up to put the Hoyas up two possessions at 55-50.
The Wildcats sliced the lead to 55-53 with 58 seconds to go on a long three-ball by junior guard Adrianna Hahn. Georgetown then ran the shot clock down and went up four at 57-53 on a lay-up by White with 30 seconds to play. Georgetown would then go 6-of-8 from the charity stripe over the game's final 21 seconds to secure the victory.
In the loss, senior guard Alex Louin registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Mary Gedaka and Hahn each added 12 points. Gedaka was 5-of-6 from the field.
Georgetown was paced by Petke who had a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds, while White tallied 20 points and nine boards.
For the game, Villanova was 22-of-51 from the field (43.1%), 5-of-24 from three-point range (20.8%) and 9-of-11 from the free throw line (81.8%), while the Hoyas shot 41.7 percent from the floor (25-of-60), 40.0 percent from long distance (4-of-10) and 56.3 percent from the foul line (9-of-16). Each team was credited with 34 rebounds.
