Baton Rouge, La.- The Villanova Wildcats (1-1) defeated the LSU Tigers (0-1) 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in overtime on the road. The match took over four hours to conclude due to multiple weather delays.
"What a great way to rebound," shared head coach Chris McLain. "Knowing how special this team is and having to suffer a massive loss on Friday, we focused on the idea that great teams know how to respond when adversity hits. They rose to the challenge by flying 1/2 way across the country, against a powerhouse SEC school like LSU; a team that is fresh because they did not play on Friday. Mix that with a 3-4 lightning delays; honestly, this was a huge victory for the Villanova program."
Hensley Hancuff started the game with two early saves to keep things scoreless. Fellow freshman
Shaye Seyffart took the Wildcat's first shot of the game in the 12
th minute, it hit the post. Just minutes later the game was suspended for just over a half hour due to lightening in the area. Once play resumed the final 30 minutes of the first half saw Hancuff make two more saves and
Kristen Vinciguerra place a shot on goal that was saved by the Tigers keeper.
It took just over an hour and a half for the second half to begin due to lightning. Villanova came out strong despite the wait and netted their first goal just 42 second in.
Chloe O'Neill crossed a pass from the right side of the box and Vinciguerra taped it in to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
LSU got on the board in the 66
th minute when Alex Thomas netted a successful penalty kick to tie the game up at 1. Hancuff then saved two more shot on goal by the Tigers, and the Wildcats defense stayed strong not allowing LSU to score on any of their 10 corner kick in the half.
The game remained tied at the end of regulation and headed into overtime. During the first sudden death period sophomore
Bri Austin was able to net the game winner in the 93
rd minute. Austin dribbled into the right side of the box and upon the end line which drew the keeper out of the net. She snuck her shot by the keeper for the win.
McLain continued "This win was a culmination of our upperclassmen knowing that we needed to play the Villanova way. They challenged the underclassmen to live up to that standard and it was evident that they were able to get the job done. LSU came out swinging and for us to move the ball the way we did is nothing short of incredible."
Villanova will now have their home opener on Wednesday, August 22
nd when they host James Madison at 4:00 P.M.
