Providence, RI. – The game was scoreless all the way through regulation, but Villanova was finally able to defeat Brown in overtime on a goal from
Jasmine Ruiz on an indirect kick in the box.
"You couldn't ask for the team to respond any better after losing late to a powerhouse ACC school like Clemson," shared head coach
Chris McLain. "The goal was to come away with at least a point and to lose it the way we did could of really left our players with their head dropped. We gave our players some time to dwell upon it but once we boarded the plane, it was all business and we had to complete the weekend by beating a top 3 Ivy League Team. Two teams, two complete different styles. These games will have us ready for Big East play."
In a quick turnaround for the Wildcats, but they dominated the game. Villanova lead in shots 18-7 and only allowed Brown to register 2 in the second half. None of Brown's shots in the second half were on goal. The Wildcats also had 10 corners to just Brown's twp.
Villanova got two early shots off, one by
Conner Huggins that was saved by Brown goalkeeper Christine Etzel and one by
Daniela Nelson that went wide.
Hensley Hancuff made a diving save in the 11
thminute to keep the game scoreless. The rest of the first half saw a couple shots on
Bri Austin but either team was able to find the back of the net and went into halftime tied at 0.
The Wildcats dominated in the second half, taking a total of 10 shots and placing four of those on goal.
Chloe O'Neill took three of those shots on goal while
Natalie Fouque placed on that made Etzel have to punch the shot over the crossbar. Brown wouldn't place any shots on goal in the second half which forced overtime.
It just over two minutes in when
Kristin Barbour would tap the ball and
Jasmine Ruiz would take an indirect free kick in the box right into the back of the net for the game winner.
"I think a dose of Clemson's great style of play and athleticism, mixed with a dose of Brown's hard lunch pail mentality and high pressure; sets us up for what we expect when we play Virginia Tech this weekend at Talon Energy Stadium," continued McLain. "To play another ACC powerhouse will reap rewards on all of our players as they continue to develop."
Villanova will be back in action Friday when they host Virginia Tech at Talen Energy Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5:00 P.M. and tickets can be purchased
