Wildcats Fall to No. 24 Fairfield in Overtime

Villanova (6-8, 1-4) fell to its second ranked opponent in a row on Sunday, losing 2-1 to No. 24 Fairfield (12-2, 3-0) in overtime.
 
The match between the Stags and Wildcats in the pouring rain was a defensive battle from beginning to end.
 
Fairfield got on the board first, scoring in the 14th minute of play.
 
While both teams had opportunities, the scored remained 1-0 until there was less than 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
 
Senior back Christen Pennington, off an assist from Emma McLaughlin, scored the equalizer.
 
It was the Langhorne, Pa., native's fifth goal of the season.
 
That goal would end up forcing overtime.
 
Five minutes into the extra period, the Stags scored the golden goal.
 
Statistic-wise the match was evenly matched.
 
Both teams ended the game with 15 shots and the Wildcats earned 10 penalty corners while Stags had nine.
 
In her second start in a row, goal keeper Claire Borman made three big saves to keep Fairfield off the board.
 
Up next, the Wildcats will travel to local BIG EAST rival Temple on Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup.
