West Orange, N.J. – The Wildcats dropped to tough games to the Pirates on Sunday. They dropped the first by a score of 7-6 and the second by a score of 11-9.
Game 1
Seton Hall struck first in the game with an RBI single in the first inning. There wouldn't be another run in the game until the top of the fourth when
Caroline Jones gave Villanova a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run to left center scoring
Megan Ruiz.
The Pirates got the run right back in the fourth and tied it, and then took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Villanova started a rally as
Paige Rauch single to left to score
Sydney Hayes.
Delaney Switzer would then single to score
Angela Giampolo to tie the game.
Jones came up with another clutch hit and scored
Becky Ducar and Switzer on an RBI single to give the Wildcats the lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
However, the Pirates would get two runners on and then Jaden Tate hit a three-run home run to left center to win the game.
Game 2
In the second game, Villanova started out strong in the first inning. Switzer singled up the middle scoring Giampolo, and then
Jordan Olivarez would single to right scoring Switzer. Seton Hall had an answer and scored four in the bottom of the first to take a two-run lead.
Switzer came up with another big hit for Villanova when she singled to center scoring Rauch, Giampolo, and Ducar would score on an error by the center fielder giving the Wildcats a 5-4 lead in the second.
The Pirates would answer once again answer back and score on a sac fly to tie the game.
Anissa Amarillas hit a sac fly in the third to take the lead back, but Seton Hall would get five runs in the third including a grand slam to take a 10-6 lead.
Hayes would come to the plate with
Olivia LaQua and
Emily Estroff on base in the fifth and hit a laser home run down the left field line to cut the lead to one. The Pirates would then hit a home run of their own in the fifth to extend the lead to 11-9, and Villanova could not trim the lead and would drop both games on the day.
Softball's next game is Wednesday at La Salle and first pitch is set for 2:30 PM.
