PRINCETON, N.J. – The women's lacrosse team were defeated 15-6 by Princeton University in a Tuesday evening non-conference contest.
Brittany Bruno led the Wildcat pack for the second game in a row after garnering her third hat trick of the season.
Grainger Rosati also had a huge hand in her team's offense. She contributed a team high three assists and a goal of her own.
Devin Hassinger and
Liz Trojan netted in the other two goals for Villanova.
Princeton started the game off with two quick goals within the first four minutes. Villanova kept the beginning interesting and answered back with two of its own to make the score 2-2 with 22 minutes left on the clock. Within three minutes of one another, Bruno netted in the first two goals for Nova on assists from
Maggie Jennings and Rosati.
The Tigers answered back with a quick goal to take back the lead 3-2 and the Wildcats were then able to hold off the strength of Princeton's offense for over ten minutes. The host would then net in a fourth and fifth goal to add more cushion to its advantage with seven and a half minutes remaining in the half.
A minute later Rosati fired one in to cut the lead to two. The Wildcats were able to get off three more shots until the Tigers added in another security goal to give them a 6-3 lead headed into the break.
The New Jersey natives wasted no time to get the second half rolling. Thirty seconds in they started their four-minute 3-0 run. Villanova eventually found the back of the net with 23 minutes on the clock and cut the opponents lead to 9-4.
Unfortunately for the 'Cats, Princeton's offense never cooled off and the Tigers hit back-to-back shots again taking an 11-4 lead.
The Wildcats netted in another set of back-to-back goals from Hassinger and then Bruno. They were able to get within five but 11-5 is the closest they would come for the rest of the contest.
Over the span of 13 minutes Princeton scored four more goals and while Villanova was able to get off four more shots. The Tigers capped the game off with their 15
th goal with only 14.3 seconds left on the clock.
Villanova trailed in shots (33-27), saves (13-7), ground balls (33-15) and free-position shots (10-5) but led in draw controls (13-10). Hassinger led the team in draw controls with eight.
The Wildcats saw time in the net from both
Alexa Moro and
Olivia Gonsalves. Moro recorded three saves and allowed nine goals on 18 shots faced in 33 minutes of action while Gonsalves recorded four saves and allowed six goals on 15 shots faced in 26 minutes.
The Wildcats are now 7-5 overall and looked to turn things around when they travel to Norfolk, Va. on Saturday, Apr. 6 to face Old Dominion in BIG EAST play.
