NEW YORK—Freshman high jumper
Sanaä Barnes (Keller, Texas) was named the BIG EAST Women's Field Athlete of the Week in an announcement made by the conference office on Monday afternoon. It is the second career weekly honor and the first outdoor award for Barnes, who is coming off a strong performance at the Penn Relays over the weekend.
Barnes was selected for the championship section of the high jump and tallied a runner-up finish with a height of 1.82 meters. She and Penn senior Anna Peyton Malizia both cleared the bar at 1.82 meters on their first try after previously making successful attempts at 1.70, 1.74 and 1.78 meters. Malizia had one less miss overall in the competition and was the event champion.
In addition to impressively finishing second at the Penn Relays as a freshman, Barnes also added the outdoor school record in the high jump to go along with the indoor record she established earlier this year. She eclipsed Villanova's previous outdoor mark of 1.79 meters which had been set by Samantha Yeats at the 2013 ECAC Championship. Barnes twice broke the school record indoors, first when she cleared 1.82 meters in January in a meet at Columbia and later when she jumped 1.84 meters at the NCAA Championships.
On this season's outdoor performance lists, Barnes is tied for 10
th nationally and tied for fifth in the East region with her mark of 1.82 meters. She also leads the BIG EAST in the high jump by a margin of 10 centimeters.
