Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Behind Lydia Sydnor's 4 Goals, Wildcats defeat Wagner 8-3

Behind its most dominant offensive performance of the season, Villanova defeated Wagner 8-3 on Friday night to improve to 2-1 on the season.

This is the first year that Wagner has had a field hockey program and this is the first time the two schools have met in the sport.

The Wildcats were in control of the game early as a result of senior forward Lydia Sydnor. Sydnor scored the first four goals of the game, putting Villanova up 4-0 after just under 18 minutes of play.

In those four goals Sydnor was assisted twice by junior Riley Dolan, twice by senior forward Megan Vermeil and once by senior back Christen Pennington.

Villanova capped off the first half with a goal from freshman Margaret Mick, which was the first goal of her collegiate career. She was assisted by Sydnor and she put the Wildcats up by five after two quarters.

To open the second half, Wagner fought back, sinking two goals back-to-back and cutting Villanova's lead to three.

In the 49th minute, Vermeil recorded her third goal of the 2019 season with an assist from junior Emily Clarke. Less than four minutes later, Vermeil scored her second goal of the game and put her team up 7-3.

The Wildcats finished its scoring onslaught with a goal in the final minute of the game from Lexi DiGennaro with an assist from Clarke.

The team's eight goals are the most scored in a game for the Wildcats since its Oct. 7 2009 game against Lehigh.

Now the Wildcats turn its attention to its first road game of the season. The team travels to the University of Pennsylvania for a 12 p.m. game on Sunday.
