Newark, Del.- The No. 15 Villanova Wildcats defeated the Delaware Blue Hens on a cold Saturday afternoon by a final of 19-10. Villanova had eight different players net goals on the day and dominated early with every shot on goal that the they took in the first half going in.
The Wildcats opened the game with a three-goal run started by
Corey McManus on a dish from
Keegan Khan. Just over a minute later it was Khan who would net the unassisted goal and then
Matt Campbell netted his first of four to close it out. Delaware netted the next two but the Wildcats answered with Khan setting up classmate
Colin Crowley and then
Eric Overbay dishing it to McManus to push Villanova up 5-2 with just over a minute to go. The Blue Hens got one seconds later but
Patrick Daly was able to set up Campbell with just seconds on the clock to go up 6-3 after one.
Villanova extended their lead in the second quarter starting off with a quick goal when
Chet Comizio scooped up the faceoff ground ball and passed it to Khan for the first of seven in the quarter by the Wildcats. Delaware scored the next two but Villanova closed it out on a six goal run. Campbell scored the first and then assisted the second when he set up
Connor Kirst. Next Kirst set up Daly to go up 10-5 with just over three to go. The Wildcat scored one goal every minute to close out before halftime with Kirst scoring in the second minute, Overbay in the final minute, and Khan set up McManus in the closing seconds to go into the locker room 13-15.
Kirst opened the third with an unassisted goal followed by a Delaware goal, which ending their 10-minute scoring drought. Next it was
Luke Prybylski who netted his first of two on the day as well as his first of the season at the 9:09 mark. Crowley followed that up with an unassisted goal of his own and Khan set up Campbell for the final goal of the quarter to push Villanova up 17-6.
Overbay and Prybylski both netted goals in the final quarter while the Blue Hens scored four to make the final 19-10.
Will Vitton played just over 55 minutes in goal and finished with 13 saves. Junior
Brendan Haggerty played in final four plus minutes and registered two saves.
Justin Coppola went 19-for-29 from the faceoff x along with a game high 11 ground balls. Comizio finished with six ground balls while
Owen Prybylski caused two turnovers.
Villanova will next play in the Philly 4 Lacrosse Classic on Friday, Mar. 8
th and Sunday, Mar. 10
th. Friday the Wildcats will take on the Penn Quakers at Franklin Field with game time scheduled for 7:30 P.M. On Sunday the Wildcats will head to Saint Joseph's to take on the Drexel Dragons. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
