Wildcats Drop BIG EAST Game at Creighton

OMAHA, NEB. – The Villanova Wildcats traveled to Omaha, Neb., on Friday evening, where they fell to the Creighton Blue Jays by a score of 67-47. With the loss, Villanova falls to 16-12 overall and 10-7 in BIG EAST play, while Creighton improves to 18-10 overall and 10-7 in league action.
 
With the score tied at 24-24 with 3:43 remaining in the opening half, the Bluejays closed the quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 32-26 lead into intermission. Olivia Elger had four of the eight Creighton points.
 
Creighton took control of the game over the first five minutes of the third quarter when the Bluejays scored the first 12 points of the second half to open-up a commanding 44-26 advantage. Jaylen Agnew had five points and two assists in the opening third quarter spurt.
 
Trailing 50-31 with 2:26 to play in the third, Villanova scored six straight points to slice the Creighton lead to 50-37 with 42 seconds on the clock. Redshirt freshman Maddy Siegrist had all six points on two conventional three-point plays. Creighton closed out the third quarter scoring when Agnew drained a three on the final play of the quarter and the Bluejays led 53-37 entering the fourth and final stanza.
 
Villanova would not get within 12 in the fourth quarter and Creighton would cruise to the win.
 
In the loss, junior guard Raven James scored a career-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range. The five triples also represent a career-best performance. Senior forward Mary Gedaka and Siegrist had 10 points each. Siegrist also pulled-down a game-high nine rebounds
 
Creighton was led by Agnew who had 20 points and eight rebounds and Elger who tallied 12 points and six caroms. Rachael Saunders was the third Bluejay in double figures with 11 points to go with six steals.
 
For the game, Villanova was 18-of-54 from the field (33.3%), 7-of-20 from three-point range (35.0%) and 4-of-4 from the foul line, while Creighton shot 30.6 percent from the floor (19-of-62), 35.7 percent from behind the arc (10-of-28) and 86.4 percent from the charity stripe (19-of-22). The Bluejays owned a 44-36 advantage on the backboards.
 
Villanova returns to action on Sunday, March 1, when the Wildcats will close out the 2019-20 regular season with a game at Providence. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
