SAN DIEGO, Calif. — After dropping the first two games of the University of San Diego Tournament, Villanova was looking to right the ship on day two. The Wildcats were taking on familiar opponents — Mount St. Mary's and San Diego — but got mixed results.
The Wildcats allowed an early run in the first game against the Mountaineers, but found a way out of the hole. Pinch running for Chloe Smith, Dani Dabroski scored on a fly ball from Caroline Jones. Then in the sixth, Paige Rauch recorded her 12th home run of the season to give Villanova a lead they would not surrender. Rauch now leads the NCAA in home runs. The junior also got things done in the circle. Rauch went seven innings with 10 strikeouts.
Villanova had to fight back in the second game against San Diego, but fell just short, 4-3.
The Toreros struck first, hitting a home run in the bottom of the second. However, after giving up the run the Wildcats closed the inning without allowing another hit. The score remained the same until the fourth, when Villanova's bats started to heat up.
Smith started the inning by singling, but advanced to second on a Megan Kern Single. Jones singled next to load the bases for the Wildcats. A few batters later, Julia DaCosta singled to left field, scoring Kern and Smith. San Diego tied the game the next inning.
The score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the fifth, when San Diego added two runs to take the lead. Headed into the seventh, the Wildcats trailed by two runs.
Anissa Amarillas singled up the middle to get things started. Becky Ducar got walked, putting two on for Villanova. With two on and two outs, Rauch singled to left field, scoring Amarillas. However, the offense sputtered following the run as no more runs would score.
The Wildcats are now 13-12 on the season. Tomorrow they take on Mount St. Mary's once more at 2:00 p.m. ET before going up against CSUN at 7:00 p.m. ET.
