Villanova Falls at #4 Maryland

College Park, Md.- The Villanova Wildcats fell to the #4 Maryland Terrapins on Friday night 88-67. Villanova is now 0-2 on the early season while Maryland moves to 2-0.

The Wildcats and Terrapins played tight through the first quarter. Villanova won the jump and Brianna Herlihy drove in for the open layup to start things off. Brooke Mullin made a three-point jumper on the next possession to give the Wildcats the lead once again. At the media timeout Villanova was within one following a three pointer from Lior Garzon. It would be Garzon again who would net a three this time at the buzzer at the end of the quarter to make it 21-20 Maryland.

The Terrapins went on a 10-0 run over four minutes in the second quarter to go up 36-23 with just under four minutes to play before halftime. Angel Reese, who had a game high 17 points at the half score four point during the Maryland run. Bella Runyan netted a three pointer, which was followed up by a three from Herlihy to bring the Wildcats within single digits.  Maddy Siegrist had back-to-back put back layups before the end of the quarter to make it 47-33 Maryland at halftime.

Herlihy started off the third quarter scoring four quick points for Villanova. The Terrapins went on an 11-point run to go up 59-37 midway through. Mimi Collins scored six of Maryland's points on the run. The run continued after the media timeout, with Maryland scoring the next nine points. Lucy Olsen netted a three to stop the run with just over three minutes to play. Kaitlyn Orihel scored a jumper on Villanova's next possessions and Mullin netted a three before the end of quarter to make it 73-45 Maryland.

The Wildcats scored 22 points in the fourth quarter led by three threes' from Garzon. The sophomore finished with 15 points and was 5-7 from the floor. Orihel scored four of the Wildcats final six points, making all four free throws down the stretch. Zanai Jones scored her first career points in the final quarter making a pair of free throws with seven minutes to play.  Villanova's defense was able to limit Maryland to only 15 points in the fourth to make the final 88-67 Maryland.

Villanova returns to action next Saturday, November 20th at Saint Joseph's. Tipoff in Philadelphia is scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
