Wildcats Fall to George Washington, 6-2, in Nightcap

Megan Kern had three hits to lead Villanova in game two of doubleheader

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In game two of today's doubleheader in the nation's capital, the George Washington Colonials gained a split with a 6-2 win over the Villanova Wildcats. Villanova falls to 3-7 on the season, while the Colonials even their record at 5-5.

Villanova got on the board first with a two-out rally in the top of the first inning. After a single by Megan Kern (Royersford, Pa.) and a walk to Julia Dacosta (North Attleboro, Mass.), Ryan Henry (Ramsey, N.J.) delivered a single down the left field line scoring Kern.

The score stayed 1-0 until the fourth when Villanova increased its lead to 2-0 on an unearned run. With the bases loaded, Angela Giampolo (East Windsor, N.J.) hit a grounder that Colonial third baseman Jenna Cone couldn't handle. The miscue allowed Erin Gray (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) to score.

In the bottom of the fifth with runners on first and second with one out, the Wildcats went to the bullpen and brought in Victoria Sebastian (Ridgewood, N.J.) to relieve starter Sara Kennedy (Newtown, Conn.). After getting the second out of the inning, Sebastian gave up a two-run single to Alessandro Ponce to tie the game at 2-2.

George Washington loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth and took the lead for good on a two-RBI single by Cone. The Colonials added two insurance runs and made it 6-2 on a Wildcat error and a steal of home.

Villanova got a double by Paige Rauch (Windsor, N.Y.) and a single by Kern in the seventh to put two on with one out, but the Colonials were able to retire Dacosta and Henry to end the game.

In the loss, Kern went 3-for-4 with a double, while Henry and Chloe Smith (Sacramento, Calif.) had two hits each.

Kennedy pitched four and a third innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out two.

Villanova is back in action on Saturday when Hofstra comes to town for a doubleheader at noon and 2:30 p.m.
