Winning Streak at 10 as Wildcats Sweep Saint Joseph’s, Win Doubleheader Nightcap 7-1

Top four hitters in Villanova batting order were 16-for-30 with 13 runs scored in Saturday’s two games

VILLANOVA, Pa.—Senior starting pitcher Anissa Amarillas (Placentia, Calif.) allowed just one run over five innings and Villanova (13-7) extended its winnings streak to 10 games with a 7-1 win over Saint Joseph's (10-8) in the second game of a doubleheader at the Villanova Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon. The winning streak is one of five in program history of at least 10 games. It was a doubleheader sweep for the Wildcats as the team also downed the Hawks by a final score of 8-1 in Saturday's opening game.

The first four batters in the Villanova lineup continued to produce offensively just as they had in the first game. Senior second baseman Angela Giampolo (East Windsor, N.J.) homered for the second straight game, senior right fielder Paige Rauch (Windsor, N.Y.) had two hits and two runs scored, sophomore third baseman Chloe Smith (Sacramento, Calif.) was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and junior catcher Ryan Henry (Ramsey, N.J.) drove in two runs. Added all together, that quartet went 8-for-15 with five runs scored and six RBI in the 7-1 win. They were also 8-for-15 in the first game of the day and combined to 16-for-30 with 13 runs scored and 11 RBI in the doubleheader.

Their production was more than enough support for Amarillas (2-0, 5.76 ERA), who scattered six hits over five innings but did not walk a batter and struck out one. The only run against her came on an RBI triple by Saint Joseph's leadoff batter Sarah Ostaszewski with two outs in the fifth inning. Freshman reliever Caroline Pellicano (Norristown, Pa.) closed out the game with two scoreless innings after she had also pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the first game.

Junior center fielder Sydney Hayes (Douglassville, Pa.) and sophomore first baseman Victoria Sebastian (Ridgewood, N.J.) drew consecutive walks leading off the bottom of the second inning in a scoreless game. Sophomore left fielder Dani Dabroski (Cedar Grove, N.J.) singled up the middle to drive in Hayes with the game's first run, while a two-out single through the right side by Smith scored Sebastian with the second run of the inning.

There were two outs and nobody on with the score still 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when the always potent Wildcats offense struck for three runs. Giampolo turned on a 2-0 pitch and drove it over the left field fence to extend the lead to 3-0. Rauch and Smith then hit consecutive singles to keep the inning going and Henry lined a 1-1 offering back up the middle for a two-run single and a 5-0 lead. It was more of the same in the bottom of the sixth inning when Giampolo led off with a walk, Rauch brought her home with an RBI double and Smith singled to right-center to bring Rauch home.

Saint Joseph's had runners at first and second with one out in the fifth inning when Kirstin Cox was caught off first base while Ostaszewski was batting. With both runners in motion the Wildcats threw out lead runner Annabella Hawkins on a 2-3-6-4 pickoff, and Cox wound up safely back at first when all was said and done. Ostaszewski then tripled to the gap in right-center to drive in the Hawks lone run of the game.

Starting pitcher Saige Stutz (3-1, 4.38 ERA) went the distance on the mount for Saint Joseph's and was charged with seven earned runs on 10 hits while walking five and striking out three.
