Season-High 15 Hits Spark Wildcats in 11-2 Win Over Delaware State

Villanova closes out doubleheader sweep with overpowering offensive showing

VILLANOVA, Pa.—Senior second baseman Angela Giampolo (East Windsor, N.J.), senior first baseman Paige Rauch (Windsor, N.Y.) and sophomore third baseman Chloe Smith (Sacramento, Calif.) each drove in two runs in the top three spots of the batting order and Villanova (16-8) swept a doubleheader from Delaware State (8-12) with an 11-2 victory in five innings in the nightcap at the Villanova Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon. Both games of the doubleheader ended in five innings, as the Wildcats won the opener 8-0 earlier in the day.

Rauch went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Smith had two hits and hit her fifth home run of the year and Giampolo also had two hits to finish the day 5-for-7 for the two games. Senior shortstop Julia DaCosta (North Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore left fielder Dani Dabroski (Cedar Grove, N.J.) also had two hits, with Dabroski hitting her first triple of the year and going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two driven in. Villanova had a season-high 15 hits and built a 10-0 lead by the end of the third inning.

After plating two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Smith and a sacrifice fly to left by junior catcher Ryan Henry (Ramsey, N.J.), the Wildcats broke out for five runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman right fielder Tess Cites (Horseheads, N.Y.) and junior center fielder Sydney Hayes (Douglassville, Pa.) started the inning with consecutive singles and Dabroski tripled to left to drive them both in. Giampolo's sacrifice fly scored Dabroski for a 5-0 lead.

Rauch, who tied the Villanova career home run record at Butler on March 20, nearly set a new record when she came up in the second inning and hit a line drive that was still rising when it hit near the top of the center field fence just inches from going over the wall. It was a long single, but Smith followed and hit the first pitch she saw far over the fence in right-center field to stretch the Wildcats lead to 7-0.

Three more runs came home in the third inning on an RBI double by Giampolo, a run-scoring single by Rauch and an RBI single by DaCosta. Villanova scored its final run of the game on Rauch's sacrifice fly to left in the bottom of the fourth.

Senior starting pitcher Anissa Amarillas (Placentia, Calif.) pitched three scoreless innings and allowed three hits while walking none and striking out one. Amarillas (3-1, 4.64 ERA) earned her third win of the season and freshman reliever Caroline Pellicano (Norristown, Pa.) pitched the final two innings to close out the game. A two-run home run by Yanique Spencer with one out in the top of the fifth inning accounted for the only two Hornets runs of the doubleheader.

Villanova hosts a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Big 5 foe Penn.
