Jones Homers Twice, Ties Single Game Record with 11 Total Bases in 10-3 Win at Seton Hall

Sophomore catcher is the first player in school history to have two home runs and a triple in a game

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.—The second game of a doubleheader turned into a home run derby for Villanova (29-11, 12-1 BIG EAST) in a 10-3 victory over Seton Hall (6-19, 2-9 BIG EAST) at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field on Saturday afternoon. After tallying a 10-0 win in six innings in the first game of the day, the Wildcats tied a season high with four home runs in the nightcap, including two homers off the bat of sophomore Ally Jones (Brielle, N.J.) who broke the game open with a fifth inning grand slam. Jones had an incredible doubleheader, going 5-for-6 with a single, a double, a triple, two home runs, two walks and six runs batted in on the day.

Villanova hit four home runs in a game for the second time this season and the 11th time in program history, while Jones tallied the 31st individual multi-homer game in the Wildcats record book. She nearly tied the program's single-game home run record with a third long ball in the seventh inning. Jones batted with one out in the seventh and tripled to right field, with the ball being misplayed by the right fielder for an error which allowed Jones to complete her trip around the bases and score for the third time in the game. Jones is the first player in school history to have two home runs and a triple in the same game, with her 11 total bases tying a single-game record which she now shares with senior teammate Julia DaCosta (North Attleboro, Mass.).

Senior right fielder Paige Rauch (Windsor, N.Y.) started the scoring with a solo home run – her eighth home run of the season and record 38th of her Villanova career. Rauch set the Wildcats career home run record earlier this season and has hit 54 collegiate homers including her time at Villanova and her freshman season at Fordham. Jones followed with a solo home run in the fourth inning against Pirates starting pitcher Kelsey Carr (3-8, 4.04 ERA) as the Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0. Seton Hall eventually tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but Jones hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and freshman pinch hitter Emily Orr (Hillsborough, N.J.) clubbed her first collegiate home run in the top of the sixth.

DaCosta and junior catcher Ryan Henry (Ramsey, N.J.) had two hits apiece for Villanova, which had 20 hits and 20 runs scored total in the doubleheader. Seven different players scored at least one run in the second game, while Jones raised her season batting average to .432 with an on-base percentage of .557 in 97 plate appearances on the year.

Junior starting pitcher Sara Kennedy (Newtown, Pa.) made her 10th start of the season and second of the week after returning from an injury which cost her just over a month of the season. She was sharp in Saturday's outing, going four innings and scattering two runs on four hits while walking none and striking out one. Kennedy (5-3, 3.95 EA) yielded a game-tying two-out double in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Wildcats plated five runs of their own in the top of the fifth and senior Anissa Amarillas (Placentia, Calif.) allowed just an unearned run over the final three innings to pick up the save.

With the score 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Kiana Tate and Abby Wingo hit consecutive singles to put runners at the corners with one away. Jaden Tate grounded out and the lead runner stayed at third as Kennedy got the second out of the inning, but Baylee Allender hit the first pitch she saw for a two-run double to right-center.

Henry led off the top of the fifth inning with a single to right-center and junior center fielder Sydney Hayes (Douglassville, Pa.) walked to advance pinch runner Erin Gray (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) to second. Sophomore left fielder Dani Dabroski (Cedar Grove, N.J.) sacrificed the runners to second and third before Rauch walked on four pitches to load the bases. Senior second baseman Angela Giampolo (East Windsor, N.J.) reached on an error which allowed Gray to score the go-ahead run. A fielder's choice and a force-out at the plate had the Pirates on the verge of escaping the inning with just one run scoring, but Jones hit a 3-1 pitch to left for a grand slam which made the score 7-2 and put the game all but out of reach.

Villanova batted around in the fifth inning and Henry led off again in the top of the sixth, this time with a single through the right side. Orr pinch hit for Hayes and drove a 1-1 pitch to left for her first collegiate home run which stretched the lead to 9-2. Seton Hall scored an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning and Jones closed the scoring at 10-3 with her trip around the bases in the seventh.

The teams wrap up their three-game series on Sunday with a single game at 12 p.m.
