Matt Campbell Featured On Inside Lacrosse Countdown of Top 50 Men’s Players For 2023 Season

Wildcats veteran midfielder and two-time All-American came in at No. 25 on countdown

VILLANOVA, Pa.—Graduate midfielder Matt Campbell (Madison, N.J.) was featured by Inside Lacrosse this week in its countdown of the top 50 collegiate men's lacrosse players entering the 2023 season. Campbell came in at No. 25 on the IL's Top 50 Men's Players for 2023 as he begins his fifth year in a Villanova uniform. He is a two-time All-American during his collegiate career and earned second team accolades last season.

The capsule bio for Campbell on the Inside Lacrosse countdown noted that he "has the size, speed and all the tools – especially an elite-level shot. First he excelled as one of the most productive midfielders in the country. He shifted at times to attack and put up 45 goals for the Wildcats in 2022."

Campbell led Villanova in goals and points (67) last season while ranking second on the team with 22 assists. His career totals beginning the 2023 season are 117 goals, 51 assists and 168 points. Campbell currently ranks fifth in school history in goals scored and is tied for sixth in the Wildcats record book in points. He is a veteran of 49 games played, including 46 starts, during his Villanova career.

During his standout season a year ago, Campbell found the back of the net at least once in all 15 games the Wildcats played. He tallied 10 games with three or more goals and eight with at least five points. Campbell's best outing of the season came in an 18-13 win over Delaware when he had a hat trick by the end of the first quarter and went on to score a career-high seven goals. He also scored five goals – including the game-winner with 20 seconds left – in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship against Denver to lift the Wildcats into the conference championship game for the first time in eight years.

Villanova opens the 2023 season on February 12 when it hosts Penn State.
