LEWISBURG, Pa. – Villanova found itself in an early hole after being held scoreless in the first quarter, falling to No. 14 Princeton 13-6 on Saturday evening at the McKinney Natatorium.
Allie Hansen led Villanova (4-5) with a hat trick, marking her first hat trick of the season.
Stella Byles,
Isabel Foley and
Emily McKenzie added one goal each, as well.
Gracin Kerry and
Abigail Shelby split time in net, allowing six and seven goals, respectively, while both making four saves.
Princeton (6-1) held Villanova without a goal through the first minutes of play with four separate Tigers connecting on chances to make it 4-0 heading into the second period.
The Tigers continued their scoring run into the second with Shanna Davidson making it a 5-0 contest at the 7:10 mark. Byles stopped the scoring drought with 6:42 remaining in the half, cutting into the lead at 5-1. Princeton got a goal back over three minutes later but Hansen closed the first half scoring with a goal in the final minute and a half, making it a 6-2 game at the break.
After a Princeton goal in the first minute of the third period, Villanova found itself gaining some ground with back-to-back goals from McKenzie and Hansen, cutting the deficit to 7-4 halfway into the third. Princeton closed the frame with a 3-0 spring, moving into the fourth at 10-4.
Villanova opened the final frame with a pair of goals from Foley and Hansen, getting the 'Cats within four at 10-6. Those were the last goals Villanova would find as Princeton closed the game on a 3-0 run through the final four minutes.
Sunday brings one more game at the Bucknell Invitational for the Wildcats. They play the hosting Bison at 10:30 a.m.
