VILLANOVA, Pa. – It was Senior Night on Friday evening at the Finneran Pavilion where the No. 15 Villanova Wildcats tallied a 67-50 win over the visiting Providence College Friars. With the victory, Villanova improves to 25-5 overall and 16-3 in BIG EAST play, while Providence falls to 13-17 on the year and 4-15 in league action.
Leading 10-7 midway through the opening quarter, the Wildcats scored the final eight points of the period to lead 18-7 after one. The sophomore duo of
Lucy Olsen and
Christina Dalce led the way in the first stanza with seven points each.
Offensive efficiency was the difference in the game's first 10 minutes, as Villanova was 7-of-12 from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point range, while the Friars were 3-of-11 and 1-of-3.
Villanova took control of the second quarter from the start out scoring the Friars by a 10-4 margin over the first three minutes to take a 28-11 advantage. The 10 points included a three-ball and lay-up by sophomore
Kaitlyn Orihel, lay-ups by Belly Runyan and Olsen and free throw from Siegrist.
A tripe by junior
Maddie Burke with 16 seconds left in the first half gave Villanova a 37-18 lead at intermission.
The Wildcats led 37-22 early in the third quarter, when Villanova scored five straight points to open-up a 42-22 lead. Siegrist scored all five points on a conventional three-point play and an offensive rebound put back.
Villanova would use the early spurt and take a 47-32 advantage after three quarters of play.
After a fast break lay-up by Friar sophomore Olivia Olsen with 5:58 to play sliced the Wildcat lead to 54-39, Villanova scored six unanswered points to put the game away. The six points came on back-to-back three-point field goals by sophomore
Zanai Jones and Runyan.
In the win, Siegrist led the way with 23 points. Olsen had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Dalce registered 11 points and six rebounds.
Providence was paced by Olsen who had 15 points and Grace Efosa who tallied 13 points.
For the game, Villanova was 25-of-63 from the field (39.7%), 8-of-26 from threepoint range (30.8%) and 9-of-14 from the foul line (64.3%), while the Friars shot 33.3 percent from the floor (17-of-51), 22.2 percent from long distance (2-of-9) and 70.0 percent from the charity stripe (14-of-20).
Villanova will close out the 2022-23 regular season on Monday night with a road game at Seton Hall. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., and the game can be seen live on FS1.
