VILLANOVA, Pa.—In the middle game of a three-game homestand No. 6 Villanova (7-2) scored four of the last five goals in the last 19 minutes of the contest but saw its rally attempt come up short in a 13-11 loss to Brown (4-4) at Villanova Stadium on Monday afternoon. Fifth year midfielder Matt Campbell (Madison, N.J.) had a team-high four goals as the Wildcats saw their six-game winning streak come to an end.
 
Late rallies in each half by Villanova cut into what had been a three-goal advantage for the Bears in the first half and a five-goal deficit midway through the third period. The final goal of the game came on a Campbell strike with 4:39 to play which got the Wildcats to within two scores for the first time since the 11:25 mark of the third period.
 
Campbell had one assist on the day and totaled five points to increase his career total to 209, moving into second place in school history and to within four points of tying Villanova's all-time record of 213 points held by Rick Bontatibus (1991-94). Fifth year attackman Patrick Daly (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had a hat trick to notch his eighth game in nine contests this season scoring three or more goals.
 
Fifth year goalie Will Vitton (Summit, N.J.) recorded seven of his eight saves on the day in the second half, including six stops in the third quarter alone. His lone save in the opening 30 minutes came in the first quarter and was a milestone as Vitton became the fourth goalie in school history to reach 600 career saves. He finished the day with 607 career stops in all and moved to within 65 of matching the program's all-time record held by Joe Canuso (2003-06).
 
Campbell netted the first goal of the game just 1:17 into the contest for a 1-0 lead before Brown countered with four straight scores to take a 4-1 advantage just over five minutes later. Villanova later trailed 6-3 after a Bears tally with 7:57 to play before halftime. Fifth year midfielder Austin Fraser (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) turned momentum towards the Wildcats when he scored with 6:53 to play in the second period. He started a four-goal Villanova run which sent the teams into the locker rooms with the Wildcats leading, 7-6.
 
After the Fraser goal got the run started, Daly scored on a nifty spin move with 3:46 to play in the half and Campbell tied the game at 6-6 with 2:42 to play in the quarter. Senior midfielder Mason Reale (Westport, Conn.) scored with 13 seconds left on the clock to put Villanova back in front for the first time since the 12:25 mark of the first quarter.
 
Brown came out of the intermission with six straight goals in just under six minutes to take its largest lead of the game, 12-7, with 7:24 to play in the third period. Sophomore attackman Luke Raymond (Crownsville, Md.) scored at the 3:51 mark of the period to stop the Bears surge and Daly completed his hat trick with his third goal of the game with 11:21 left in the contest. Brown scored for the last time with 10:20 on the clock, while Wildcats goals by junior attackman Matt Licata (Sandown, N.H.) and Campbell in the closing minutes were as close as Villanova would get.
 
Offensive chances were plentiful for the Wildcats, who outshot the Bears by a 48-37 final margin. That included a 22-11 edge in shots in the first half and a 17-7 advantage in the fourth quarter. Brown goalie Connor Theriault had 22 saves on the day and made seven stops in the final 15 minutes to thwart the Villanova rally attempt.
 
The edge in shots was partly a result of a tenacious Wildcats defensive effort which forced 26 turnovers. Villanova was +12 in the turnover column and had 11 caused turnovers, led by two apiece from fifth year Brody LaPorte (San Carlos, Calif.) and freshman David Evanchick (Darien, Conn.). The defense has forced 13 failed clears in the last two games against Navy and Brown.
 
Monday's game was the second straight weekday contest for the Wildcats and also marked the team's final regular season non-conference game. Villanova returns to its traditional Saturday schedule, opens its BIG EAST slate and plays the final game of this three-game homestand this week when it hosts St. John's (0-9) at Villanova Stadium at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
