David Evanchick Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week as Trio of Wildcats Earn Recognition

Fifth year midfielder Matt Campbell and sophomore defenseman Tripp Robinson were each selected to this week’s BIG EAST Honor Roll

NEW YORK—Villanova comes off a win in its BIG EAST opener last weekend with three weekly conference honors which were announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Freshman close defender David Evanchick (Darien, Conn.) was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week while fifth year midfielder Matt Campbell (Madison, N.J.) and sophomore LSM Tripp Robinson (Summit, N.J.) were each selected for the weekly Honor Roll. This is the fourth time this season that the Wildcats have had three or more players garner BIG EAST recognition in one week.

There is still a month left in the regular season but Villanova has earned a total of 19 weekly BIG EAST honors this season, already just one off the most in a single season since the inauguration of BIG EAST men's lacrosse in 2010. This year's group of Wildcats are just one more weekly accolade away from matching the 2018 squad which combined for 20 weekly honors during the season. The recognition for Villanova this season includes 10 of the major weekly awards to go along with nine Honor Roll selections. The individual honors have come as the Wildcats are off to an 8-2 start to the season.

Evanchick is the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second time this year after he recorded two caused turnovers in each of the Villanova games last week against Brown and St. John's. He totaled one assist, five ground balls and four caused turnovers in the two contests. Evanchick tallied his third assist of the season in the 18-8 win over St. John's on Saturday to go along with three ground balls and the two caused turnovers in the game. He has now recorded four games this year with at least two forced miscues. Evanchick is the Wildcats fourth player since 2018 to be a two-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, joining 2018 honorees Dan Fisher and Keegan Khan as well as current teammate Will Vitton who earned the award twice in 2019.

This week marks the first career BIG EAST honor for Robinson, who is coming off two of the biggest games of his career last week. He was the top performer on the Villanova defense in the games against Brown and St. John's, particularly in the latter contest when he had career highs of four caused turnovers and two assists in the 10-goal victory. The four caused turnovers by Robinson match the most in a game by any Wildcats player this season, with two of those forced turnovers leading directly to goals on the ensuing Villanova possessions. Robinson picked up four ground balls in each of the two contests last week and he added both an assist and a caused turnover to his stat line in the Brown game.

Campbell has now been recognized by the BIG EAST six times in eight weeks this season, including three BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week honors to go along with being named to the Honor Roll this week for the third time. The veteran member of the Wildcats offense and a candidate for this year's Tewaaraton Award, Campbell led Villanova in goals, assists and points last week. He totaled seven goals, six assists and 13 points on the week while attempting 21 shots and putting 16 of those shots on target. Campbell has five games with a hat trick or better this season, as well as two games apiece with five or more assists and a total of eight points.

Saturday's game against St. John's was a historic one for Campbell, who broke the Wildcats career record for points scored with his third goal of the game at the 8:20 mark of the third period. That tally moved him past Rick Bontatibus (1991-94) who held the old record of 213 career points. Campbell eventually finished the day with a current career stat line of 217 points, including a school-record 145 goals to go along with 72 assists. He had five assists against St. John's to move up three spots on the Villanova career list into a tie for seventh place. Campbell had eight points (three goals, five assists) against St. John's, marking the second time this year and third time in his career he compiled an eight-point outing.

There are five regular season games remaining for the Wildcats, who are ranked No. 11 in this week's Inside Lacrosse media poll and come in at No. 9 in the USILA Coaches Poll. Villanova travels to No. 19/17 Denver on Saturday for a 2 p.m. Eastern time (12 p.m. CT) matchup against the Pioneers.
