Stats Perform today announced the 25 finalists for the Jerry Rice Award with Villanova freshman running back David Avit (Potomac, Md.) on the list. The award honors the national freshman player of the year in college football's Division I FCS subdivision.
Now in its 14th season, the award is named after the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver, who played on the FCS level at Mississippi Valley State. Past recipients include Cooper Kupp, Chase Edmonds, Trey Lance, Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders.
Avit has played in all 11 games this year and has tallied 140 carries for 764 yards (5.5 avg.) and eight touchdowns to go with six catches for 78 yards. His best effort of the season came at Stony Brook when he registered 13 carries for 183 yards and four touchdowns.
Villanova earned the No 11 seed in the upcoming FCS playoffs. The Wildcats will host Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 30.
