VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova men's lacrosse had its three-game win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, falling to the No. 13 Pennsylvania Quakers 11-8 at Villanova Stadium.
Matt Licata once again paced Villanova (3-3) in scoring with four points on a pair of goals and assists. Thomas McIntire contributed two goals and an assist, Lucas Newton added a goal plus an apple and three other players appeared in the scoring column for the Wildcats.
Justin Coppola won 17 of the 22 faceoffs he took in the game while grad transfer Stephen Zupicich led the game with an impressive six caused turnovers. Anthony Wilson made nine saves between the pipes for the 'Cats and defenseman Reid Colwell added three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Villanova struck first in the matchup with a tally just 27 seconds into the contest as Licata quick sticked a feed from Newton on the crease and put the 'Cats ahead.
Penn got three straight from that point until 12 ticks left in the opening quarter when the Wildcats finally tallied another with a Colin Michener laser to end the frame at 3-2.
Stevie Jones leveled the matchup shortly into the second stanza, then it was three straight for the Quakers for a 6-3 edge. Luke Raymond used a solo effort to bring VU back within a couple on a strong dodge from X, then Penn answered not even a minute later to make the score 7-4 at the half.
The first two goals of half two came off the crosse of McIntire, using a feed from Licata for his first tally and dodging a short stick for the other. Penn scored two in the final four and a half minutes of that frame, bookending a Newton slam dunk on a dot from Licata.
Licata began the fourth with an extraordinary individual play, absorbing multiple checks and finishing in front of the cage for his fourth point of the day. His fourth quarter-opening tally meant Villanova scored first in every period of the game, but it was the last time the Wildcats would beat the visiting netminder.
Pennsylvania created more distance with a pair of scores before five minutes on the clock, and neither team could find the twine the rest of the way as the Quakers escaped with an 11-8 victory.
UP NEXT: The Wildcats will remain on the Main Line for a week, waiting to host Monmouth on Saturday, Mar. 16 at 12 p.m. from Villanova Stadium.
