PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Villanova softball suffered a midweek loss in its non-conference finale, falling to the Pennsylvania Quakers 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Penn Park.
Brooklyn Ostrowski brought home the lone run of the day for Villanova (25-19) with a sixth-inning solo shot. Ava Franz contributed the Wildcats' lone multi-hit effort with a couple singles during the game with four other players adding a single in the loss.
Maranda Runco received the loss in her first career start, going three innings with a pair of strikeouts as Kat Gallant went three frames with a trio of Ks in relief.
Lilly St. Jean got the game started with a two-out single in the first but the 'Cats couldn't score, then three straight groundouts got Runco out of the opening frame unscathed.
The Quakers strung together two singles and a walk for ducks on the pond in the second, but Runco got a lineout and backwards K to end the chance.
Penn took advantage of a pair of leadoff bases on balls to start the third, breaking the scoreless tie and going up 3-0 with a few singles and a groundout.
Tess Cites and Elaina Wagner each beat out infield singles in the fifth but hard-hit balls from St. Jean and Franz were both tracked down in right field to keep VU off the board.
Ostrowski finally broke through for the Wildcats in the sixth, crushing one out of the yard in a hurry for her 11th of the year and a two-run ballgame. Chloe Smith followed that up with a bloop single down the line, but the 'Cats couldn't manage to get any closer.
The Quakers took that one back with a triple followed by a safety squeeze to capture a 4-1 edge, which is where the game wrapped up despite a few VU baserunners.
UP NEXT: A critical series awaits the Wildcats in New England, traveling to Storrs for a three-game series against the Connecticut Huskies. Games are set for 3:00, 6:00 and 2:00 PM from Burrill Family Field, with Saturday's game slated for coverage on FS1.
