OMAHA, Neb. – The Villanova Wildcats picked up a split of Friday's doubleheader with a 3-2 win in the second game of the day, outlasting Creighton at the CU Sports Complex.
Brooklyn Ostrowski belted her seventh home run with a fourth-inning solo shot for Villanova (19-15, 10-1 BIG EAST) as Elaina Wagner kept up her hot streak by driving home the game-winning run on an RBI double.
Kelsey White earned her fifth win of the year with a five-inning, two-strikeout performance in the circle, adding a base hit and run scored to help herself out. Caroline Pellicano delivered her fifth save of the season with two innings of shutout work, tying her for second place in Villanova's all-time top 10 for saves.
It was a slow start to the matchup with the only Villanova baserunners in the opening three frames coming via a trio of bases on balls.
Creighton had players on the basepaths in each of those first three stanzas, but White stranded a two-out double in the first and two leadoff singles in the second. The Jays finally plated one in the third, using two singles and a hit by pitch for the runners before a wild pitch granted the home side an edge.
Ostrowski changed that in a hurry, blasting the first pitch of her at bat out to the fence where it glanced off the center fielder's glove and went over the wall to level the contest at one apiece.
The Wildcats kept that momentum going into the top of the fifth with Grace Reed earning a leadoff walk before White singled through the left side.
A wild pitch advanced both into scoring position, then a Tess Cites grounder got the first runner nailed at the dish but smart running by Cites drew a throw to second and White slid around the tag at the plate for a Wildcat lead.
Wagner expanded that edge just a batter later on a double off the very top of the wall, scoring Cites and getting VU up two.
As was typical throughout the day, Creighton responded with a tally of its own on a two-out rally in the bottom half of that fifth frame, stringing together a double, walk and RBI single for a one-run ballgame.
The Wildcats got blanked in both the sixth and seventh stanzas, so it was all up to the right-hander from Eagleville, Pa.
Pellicano had to work through runners on third in each of her innings, but the senior pulled it out for the Wildcats and delivered a split of the day in Nebraska.
