Olympic Trials Day 4: Lifetime Bests for Liam Murphy and Sanaä Barnes in Olympic Trials Finals

Barnes notched a top-five finish in the high jump and Murphy was the third collegian in 1500 meter final

EUGENE, Ore.—Rising fifth year collegian Liam Murphy and women's alumna Sanaä Barnes recorded their latest outstanding performances with lifetime best marks in the finals of their respective events at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Monday night. It was an exciting night of competition for Villanovans at Hayward Field with action in women's high jump, men's 1500 meters and women's 3000 meter steeplechase. Murphy and Barnes each qualified for the finals in their events with results over the weekend.

WOMEN'S HIGH JUMP

Barnes improved her lifetime best mark in the high jump just as she had in her first Trials appearance three years ago. She cleared the bar at 1.88 meters in Monday night's final, one centimeter higher than she jumped in the 2021 qualifying round. A fast start built momentum and quickly moved Barnes into the top of the standings in the final round.

She passed at the opening height of 1.73 meters and entered the competition with the bar at 1.78 meters and all 12 competitors still alive. Barnes cleared 1.78 meters on her first try and did the same at successive bar raises to 1.83 meters and 1.88 meters. She was the second athlete to make it over at 1.88 meters and was either alone or tied for first place in the standings after each of her three jumps.

By the time the bar moved up to 1.91 meters, half of the field had been eliminated and Barnes was guaranteed no worse than a sixth place finish. She did one spot better and came in fifth overall, with two close attempts on her final two tries at 1.91 meters despite the bar falling each time.

MEN'S 1500 METERS

It has been an exhilarating and redemptive week for Murphy after three races in four days in the 1500 meters. Two weeks after he finished 11th in the final of the NCAA Championships on the same Hayward Field track, Murphy was the third collegian across the finish line in the final of Olympic Trials. He registered a lifetime best mark of 3:36.37 in Monday night's race.

Murphy went from near the back of the back into second place in his semifinal heat on Saturday evening and had been the fastest runner in the field over the final 300 meters in both the first round and semifinals. Those were statement performances in his Trials debut, as was his finish in Monday's final. Murphy's time of 3:36.37 is the sixth-fastest time in school history and lowers his PR by .11 seconds (3:36.48) from the now-seventh time in the program record book, Murphy had registered that mark in California in April.

Monday's race was a sprint from the start and Murphy's split through 800 meters (1:56.59) was nearly five full seconds faster than the first two laps had been two nights earlier. Seven of the 12 runners in the final have achieved the Olympic standard of 3:33.50 and Murphy stayed within striking distance of the pack until the final lap of the race.

WOMEN'S 3000 METER STEEPLECHASE

Lydia Olivere competed at her second straight Olympic Trials in the steeplechase after having made her debut – along with her former teammate Barnes – while still a Villanova undergraduate three years ago. Olivere raced in the second of two heats on Monday and recorded a time of 10:00.71, placing 13th in her section and 25th overall.

The Olympic Trials take a two-night break on Tuesday and Wednesday in order for athletes to have practice time at Hayward Field in advance of competition later in the week. When action resumes on Thursday night, the Wildcats will be represented in the first round heats of the men's 800 meters by Sean Dolan and in the first round of the women's 1500 meters by alumna Angel Piccirillo. Dolan was a seven-time collegiate All-American who wrapped up his Villanova career with a fifth place finish in the 800 meters at the NCAA Championships earlier this month. He has signed professionally with Atlanta Track Club and adidas Running. The first round of the 800 meters at the Trials is slated for 7:30 p.m. Eastern time (4:30 p.m. Pacific time) on Thursday night and will be the day's first event on the track.

Later on Thursday is the first round of the women's 1500 meters at 8:23 p.m. Eastern time. Piccirillo is competing at her second Olympic Trials after running for Villanova from 2012-17. During her career she set a collegiate women's record by being a part of nine Penn Relays titles. She was a nine-time All-American and an 11-time BIG EAST champion for the Wildcats while tallying two career top-eight NCAA finishes in the mile. Piccirillo currently runs for PUMA / Puma Elite Running and has a lifetime best of 4:05.32 in the 1500 meters which was set in August 2023.
