STORRS, Conn. – Villanova faced an early 10-point deficit it could not climb back from, falling to No. 6 Connecticut, 100-57, Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion.
Jasmine Bascoe paced Villanova (10-10, 4-4 BIG EAST) with 15 points on six made field goals, three of those from long distance to match a season-best, adding a team-high four assists.
Maddie Burke and
Maddie Webber both added 11 points each. Burke led the team with seven rebounds, all on the defensive end.
The first bucket of the game belonged to the 'Cats with
Denae Carter connecting on a layup, but UConn (18-2, 9-0 BIG EAST) answered with a 12-0 run to create distance, forcing Villanova into a timeout in the first four minutes of action. Burke ended that run with a three-point play, connecting on a jumper and sinking the following foul shot. Webber accounted for seven of the last 10 points the 'Cats scored in the frame with a three and two jumpers, but KK Arnold had the last word, hitting a buzzer-beater as time expired to make it a 31-15 UConn lead through the first.
Villanova got within 11 by the 7:23 mark of the second thanks to a 9-4 run that was capped by a three pointer from Bascoe. The Huskies rattled off a 19-1 run to jump out to a 54-25 lead with 2:36 remaining in the half. Burke and Webber combined for three baskets down the stretch with Webber hitting a jumper in the final 20 seconds, heading into the break trailing 58-32.
The Wildcats shot 45% from the field in the first half on 13-of-29 shooting while UConn shot at a 70% clip, going 21-of-30. That second quarter brought Nova's best shooting frame of the night, going 7-of-13 from the field (53.8%).
Momentum stayed on the side of the Huskies in the third quarter with Villanova not being able to find a scoring run in the stanza. Bascoe had a five-point burst of her own midway through but the Huskies went on an 11-2 scoring push after that, taking the game to the fourth with UConn leading 86-44.
Villanova's largest deficit of the night came at the 5:11 mark when Ashlynn Shade hit a three for a 10-2 UConn run to push its lead out to 96-46. Bascoe and Burke connected on back-to-back threes shortly after with Bascoe and Allen accounting for the Blue and White's final five points.
UConn's Sarah Strong led all scoring with 22 points, trailed closely by Paige Bueckers who accounted for 21.
Villanova returns home on Saturday to host Xavier. Tip-off from the Finneran Pavilion is set for 2 p.m.
