CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-The Villanova field hockey team closed out its home slate in impressive fashion on Friday, earning a 4–2 victory over BIG EAST rival Providence.
The first quarter was tightly contested, with both teams battling to find an offensive rhythm. Despite the Friars holding a slight edge in shots (4–2), freshman goalkeeper Sophie Volkel kept Villanova level by stopping the only Providence shot on goal.
The action picked up in the second quarter as both sides broke through with goals. Providence struck first, but senior Barrett Trigg quickly responded, tying the game off a well-placed assist from junior Colleen Finnan. Trigg's equalizer came with under two minutes left in the first half, giving the Wildcats a surge of momentum heading into halftime.
Villanova carried that energy into the third quarter, controlling play and generating seven shots. Freshman Erin Mitchell put the Wildcats ahead less than a minute into the second half, finishing off a perfect setup from junior Jane Bresnahan. Her goal would stand as the only score of the period, sending Villanova into the final frame with a 2–1 lead.
The Wildcats' offense stayed aggressive in the fourth quarter, producing three more goals between both teams. Mitchell struck again for her second goal of the match, assisted by Trigg, before Providence cut the lead to one on a penalty corner with seven minutes remaining. Graduate student Ava Borkowski sealed the victory with a late goal, securing a much-needed 4–2 win for Villanova in its home finale.
After the game, head coach Joanie Milhous praised her team's offensive execution:
"One of the major things we've been working on is scoring goals, and I'm really excited that we were able to do that today! Erin Mitchell stepped up, which was fantastic—she had two—but I'm just really happy for our girls. They kept battling, and we finally got the scoring we've been looking for."
