VILLANOVA, PA. – The Villanova Wildcats completed the season sweep of the Georgetown Hoyas on Wednesday night with a 70-65 win at the Finneran Pavilion. With the victory, Villanova improves to 16-11 overall and 10-5 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown falls to 11-15 on the year and 4-11 in conference play.
The story of the opening quarter for the Wildcats was the play of freshman point guard
Jasmine Bascoe who scored 12 first quarter points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, including a 2-of-2 effort from three-point range.
Villanova held the Hoyas to just 3-of-13 shooting from the field in the game's first 10 minutes and led 17-10 after one period of play.
The Wildcats led 28-23 when they scored seven of the last nine points of the second quarter to lead 35-25 at halftime. Junior
Ryanne Allen led the late quarter surge, scoring five of the seven points on a three-ball from the corner and two free throws.
Bascoe was sensational in the first half scoring 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field and a 3-of-3 effort from three-point range.
Following a lay-up by sophomore guard
Maddie Webber that gave the Wildcats a 43-34 advantage, Georgetown ran off five straight points to slice the lead to 43-39. A three-point field goal by Georgetown's Ariel Jenkins pulled the Hoyas within three at 45-42, before Villanova answered with a triple by
Maddie Burke and a short jumper by Webber. The Webber basket increased the Villanova lead to 50-42.
The Wildcats would take a 52-46 lead into the fourth quarter.
Georgetown took its first lead of the game at 57-55 on a three-ball by Victoria Rivera with 6:55 remaining in regulation. The Rivera trifecta finished off an 8-0 Hoya run. After Villanova's
Bronagh Power-Cassidy tied the game at 57-57 on a lay-up, the Hoyas went back-up three at 60-57 on a triple from the wing by Kelsey Ransom.
After a Ransom short jumper put the Hoyas up 62-61 at the 4:01 mark, Villanova responded with a decisive 8-0 spurt to take a 69-62 lead with 1:57 on the clock. The run included two lay-ups by
Denae Carter, a free throw by Bascoe and a dagger three by Burke from the corner.
In the win, Bascoe led the Wildcats with a career-high tying 26 points, while Webber had 15 points and Carter finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Georgetown was paced by Ransom with 25 points and Jenkins who added 16 points.
For the game, Villanova was 24-of-53 from the field (45.3%), 10-of-20 from three-point range (50.0%) and 12-of-18 from the foul line (66.7%), while the Hoyas shot 42.3 percent from the floor (22-of-52), 41.2 percent from long distance (7-of-17) and 93.3 percent from the charity stripe (14-of-15). Georgetown owned a 33-29 advantage on the backboards.
Villanova returns to action on Sunday afternoon with a game at Providence. Game time is set for noon and it can be seen live on FS1.
