Weekly Wrap: Villanova Announces Top Performers for the Week Ending September 21

New for the 2025-26 academic year, Villanova will announce its top performers from the previous week in a press release and social media post each Monday afternoon. The weekly wrap will recognize one standout student-athlete from each sport who competed during the previous week.

VILLANOVA, Pa.—Junior midfielder Gabby Koluch (Freehold, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal in the 27th minute on Saturday as women's soccer defeated Seton Hall, 1-0, in its BIG EAST lid lifter. Koluch's first goal of the season earns her a spot on this week's Weekly Wrap recognizing the best in Villanova Athletics from the week of September 15-21. Women's soccer improved to 6-3 overall on the year with Saturday's victory.

Last week was also a good one for the women's cross country team which posted a first place finish at the Main Line Invitational. The local meet was a chance for several of the younger runners on the team to get race experience, and the Wildcats placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 10 overall to finish three points ahead of Penn and the rest of the 10-team field. It was collegiate newcomer Zoe Mosher (Pleasantville, N.S.) leading the way for Villanova with a fifth place overall finish in her collegiate debut.

Football opened conference play with a road trip to Monmouth and put up some big offensive numbers despite an eventual 51-33 setback. Sophomore running back David Avit (Frederick, Md.) recorded his third career 100-yard rushing game and first this season with 135 yards and three touchdowns. It is the second time in his collegiate career that he has scored three or more touchdowns in a game.

It was a big week for field hockey as the Wildcats hosted their conference opener against nationally ranked Connecticut in addition to hosting the defending national champions from Northwestern. In the first game against the Huskies, junior back Addie Froehlich (Virginia Beach, Va.) netted the only Villanova score on a perfectly executed penalty corner. After trailing 2-0 early in the game, the Wildcats pushed UConn to the brink and had a penalty corner with no time left on the clock and a chance to tie the score.

The Weekly Wrap also features sophomore middle blocker Campbell McKinnon (Collierville, Tenn.) from volleyball, redshirt sophomore Luke Martelli (Kinzers, Pa.) from men's soccer and women's tennis senior Maggie Gehrig (Charlotte, N.C.). McKinnon is leading the BIG EAST in hitting percentage with a .478 clip through the season's first 11 matches. She had 40 kills across three matches last week in a tournament at South Dakota, including 16 in a five-set thriller to beat Wichita State on Saturday.

Martelli assisted on the Wildcats only goal of the game in a 1-1 draw with DePaul in the team's BIG EAST opener last week. He is one of two Villanova players this season with at least one goal and assist on the year, and is tied for third on the team with seven shots. Gehrig tallied singles wins over opponents from Delaware and NJIT as the women's tennis team opened its season hosting the Villanova Invitational. Included in her success for the week was a tiebreaker victory (6-2, 1-6, 10-7) over Delaware in her season debut.
