Villanova is set to travel to Milwaukee on Sunday for a BIG EAST contest against Marquette. The Wildcats enter play riding a 10-game winning streak with a 12-2 overall record and a 5-0 conference mark, while the Golden Eagles are 9-5 on the year and 3-2 in league play. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m., eastern time at the Al McGuire Center. The game can be seen live on Peacock.
Villanova and Marquette will be meeting for the 39
th time on Sunday. Marquette currently leads the all-time series by a 20-18 count. The Wildcats have had the upper hand of late in the series, winning eight of the last 10.
The last six games between Villanova and Marquette have been decided by a total of 31 points, with four of the six decided by a total of 12 points. Villanova and Marquette played three times last season with Villanova winning two of the three. The Wildcats won at home (63-53) and in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament (73-66), while the Golden Eagles tallied a 64-59 home win over the Wildcats. During the 2023-24 season, the two teams played three times with the three contests decided by a total of seven points.
The Wildcats enter play at Marquette ranked as the second-best defensive team in the league. Villanova is currently allowing 58.8 points per game, and its opponents are shooting just .372 from the field (298-of-802). Connecticut is the first in the league in both categories at 52.5 points per game and a .341 field goal percentage defense.
Senior
Ryanne Allen has been dialed in from three-point range in the last four games where she is 13-of-20 (.650) from behind the arc. In Thursday's win over Creighton, Allen was 5-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Allen is currently averaging 9.1 points per game, and she is shooting .500 from behind the arc (27-of-54). The 27 threes lead the team.
Rookie guard
Kennedy Henry is coming off the best game of her young career. In Thursday's win over Creighton, Henry scored a career-high 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, a 3-of-3 effort from three-point range and a 4-of-5 performance from the foul line. She also had six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. After 14 games, Henry is averaging 9.1 points per game and 4.4 rebounds per contest. She also leads the team in steals with 26 and blocks with 19. She is third in assists with 42.
Following the trip to Milwaukee, Villanova returns home to host Xavier on Thursday, January 8. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m.
